My Fiancee Has a Serious Health Issue

Hello,

In my last post here I said that my fiancee said we could not get married, because her father disapproved. Then I said the next day she asked me if I wanted to get married.

Well, I ended up giving her another chance, but that marriage did not take place. And not for the reasons one would think.

It seems that my fiancee has a serious health issue. In the past she asked me about helping a friend with a liver problem. It seems that friend was herself. She also mentioned to me while I am here in China now that she needs to go to the doctor to take some liver tests and so on. She also told me she vomited when trying to eat, recently.

She called me on the phone last night and told me to go onto the Instant Messenger to chat. She said she just got home from the hospital and the doctor told her that she has 'high transaminase'.

I told her to wait until I searched the term 'high transaminase' on the U.S. Kaiser Permanente website. The first search result returned "Reye syndrome".

The symptoms are exactly as she says she experiences, vomiting, dizziness, lack of apetite and so on.

It can be a potentially life threatening disease. It can put the person into a coma. It can create seizures.

It seems this health situation has been getting worse and worse over time and has gotten even worse since I got here so she had to go back home and see a doctor. She told me she even collapsed, which is also a symptom of this disease.

Of course I am devestated in a big way and scared for her. I care about her deeply.

My fiancee is scared and does not want to get married until she takes care of this health issue. She does not think she would pass the Visa medical exam and does not want to waste my time or not be able to get a visa after failing the medical.

I am pretty sure I can only get her covered under my health insurance plan in the U.S. to see a U.S. doctor, if she is my wife first.

My questions are:

1) If me and my fiancee do get married in China now, with her health condition, is it unlikely she could pass the Medical Exam for the CR-1 Visa?

2) If she entered the U.S. on a Tourist Visa, is there any way I could help her get good medical treatment that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg?

3) What is the best way I can help her get the best treatment possible for this disease? Any alternate ideas you can think of?

Thanks,

I suggest you have her checked out by a Doctor of your choice.

First, I don't think that liver problems are a denial for a K1 visa. Usually they check for communicable disease.

Second, are you SURE this is Reye's Syndrome? It's a very rare condition in adults. Also, it's associated with asprin use.

Just because she has high liver enzymes doesn't mean she has Reye's. It could be something that can be treated, like Hepatitis.

When you research things, it can cause you to panic. I understand how you feel but take a deep breath and don't assume the worst.

Next, it is important to get her to a physician to find out exactly what IS going on. I agree, take her to a Dr. of your choice.

Find out what's going on first and THEN handle the visa issue. It may not be as severe as you believe it is.

Good luck!

I don't know how you came up with Reye sindome, because high elevations of the transaminases suggests severe liver damage, usually found in people with viral hepatitis(hepatitis B) You said "in the past she asked me about helping a friend with a liver problem. It seems that friend was herself", well as you can see she wasn't truthful in the past with you then please ask her if she has viral hepatitis B and if she says yes, then go to see a doctor urgent if you had intercourse with her without using condom, because viral hepatitis is contagious, and i hope she doesn't have that. Hepatitis B is not a communicable disease of "public health significance" for immigration purposes.

As a tourist she can't get any free treatment here in the USA, just for emergency, that's all.

Hi Boiler,

Thanks for your reply.

A doctor of my choice in China, or the U.S.?

If a doctor in the U.S., how do I get her there without jeopardizing our marriage visa and without the medical costs costing an arm and a leg?

If a doctor in China, how do I know who is qualified or who would make a good choice?

Thanks,

Hi Bumbero,

Thanks so much for the info. I really do appreciate it very much.

I can breath a little now. I do not know if it is Reye's Syndrome or not. It was just the first article that came up when I did a search for "high transaminase" on the Kaiser Hospital website. And the symptoms were what she had. But now I am thinking it is probably not this disease.

I definitely agree with you on getting her to the right doctor. She is in Guangzhou now and tells me this is the best hospital. But she also tells me that the doctor there gave her very little time and just rushed her through. She told me they are very busy at this hospital treating many people and do not give her much attention.

Yes, her health issue is of paramount importance now. I just thought if we were married and had a CR-1 visa, then I could get her to a good hospital and doctor in the U.S. sooner than later.

Thanks again,

Of course! Take a breath, and try to relax a little. I understand why you're stressed though. I would be if I was in your position.

I don't think that you can get a tourist visa for her just for her to come get medical treatment but I could be wrong. The spouse visa takes time to process as well. Best thing, just start her treatment there. The sooner she is treated, the better the prognosis REGARDLESS what her condition is. If it IS Hepatitis, the sooner she is treated the better.

Don't research anymore until you have a diagnosis. You can literally make yourself sick with all the possible outcomes based on signs and symptoms alone.

Take care!!

Hi sandranj,

Thanks for the info. I thought it might be Reye Syndrome because when I did a search for 'high transaminase' on the U.S. Kaiser Hospital website, the first article that came up was about Reye Syndrome, and the symptoms described were what my fiancee told me she was experiencing.

Relieved to find out it is probably not this disease. Not so relieved to find out it might be Hepatitis B and that I might've caught it from her. But I doubt I caught it because I did use a condom every time, except for one close call where she almost got me without one. But that was two years ago and I think I would have been sick or had symptoms by now, if so, not sure. If we are talking about Hepatitis B.

Thanks again for the info.

You should get immunizations for travel to China anyway, which include Hep A, B, Tetanus, and Malaria if you go into the deep south.

If you are still in China, go to the hospital with her, and try to get direct information if it is Hep B. Antiviral medicine is really the only way to slow the effects of the disease, and I have no idea if it is available at major hospitals in China; probably, but only in major cities like Guangzhou. Don't let her go to a hometown hospital for treatment; they don't know what they are doing and won't have proper care.

I was married in China then filed the CR-1 4 years ago when there was no electronic filing and it took all of 9 months to have the visa in hand. As soon as I got back from my trip getting married I researched coverage for my wife on our benefit plans as a "life event aka married" and was told the second she was here she would be covered. With that said I will stress what others have said. It takes a long time and effort to go through the immigration process and is horribly stressful even when you both are physically and mentally well. If you think you can get through with the added worries (when you did your internet search about liver problems with limited information and panicked immediately, think of that exact moment and that stress will be multiplied)

The most important thing is finding out facts and not letting worry and imagination run away. I have to be blunt.. You say you care deeply for her but define that you don't want to have to pay an arm or a leg for treatments. I guess I have to ask.. Does money really matter when it comes to health? I mean is that even worth considering for the person you want to marry to be well? Money is only money health is the only thing that matters.

I really think positive thoughts your way please please take care of her and find out what is going on. You are in the place to be for medical treatment. Good luck and we all are with you hoping the best!

The other day, on a different question, the OP was calling his fiancee a crazy lady, and was looking to possibly get engaged to another Chinese lady before his remaining two weeks in China were done. He wanted to save money on more trips to China with his new prospect, since he thought he was done with this one. Sounds like a troller. Hello,

It takes me forever to be able to access this site. Is anyone else experiencing this? Or is this because I am in China?

Or is this because my IP Address has already been partially blocked, for standing up to people who ridicule me and keep trying to make me look like a fool, every time I make a post here?
