Hello everyone,

I am just wondering cuz I've seen it a lot, and I am thinking ahead. What does being placed on "AP" mean?? And how long does it usually last? And what happens during the process. Thanks a lot for any replies!

AP refers to Administrative Processing. A file is generally placed in AP following an interview at the beneficiarys local USE, if there are any discrepancies in the file, if there is the need for extra documentation from the applicants, and also to conduct security checks. However, it is a blanket term that is used to describe exactly what it is. Administrative Processing. It could be as simple as a paper shuffle.

The most daunting part of AP tends to be the lack of information that you can access whilst your visa is in AP. From calling DoS day to day, to emailing the embassy, to a congressional inquiry; the answer always tends to come back as "It will take as long as it takes, we will let you know when we are done." Which is pretty much the deal.

It's hard, and it always comes when you feel like you are SO close, but it's just another part of the waiting game we all know how to play so well.

Thanks a lot for the reply. So is it possible to get your visa approved during the interview and still be placed on AP?? I've seen some people posting about that. So it means that your visa is not really "approved" until your placed off AP??

I had my interview in London 13 days ago, and after no delivery of my visa I called DoS who told me that my case was in AP. I called them 20 minutes ago... Low and behold, I am still in AP! This is all after having been told at the embassy, by the consular officer, that I had been approved. So in all honesty, until you have the visa in hand, make no assumptions that you will be jetting off for the US a week later.

What country are you from? AP is common in some countries but not others... there is no need to get worried about something that might not happen to you.
