He's done. He proved to the world tonight that being an etch-a-sketch candidate has its drawbacks.

I'm not worried. Show me someone that WAS going to vote for that now is NOT going to vote for him because of this. Just one.

It's the undecided voters they are worried about. Voters who have already made up their minds get nothing out of these debates.

Come to find out that Mitt is really convinced of the fact that Syria is Iran's route to the sea. He's said it on many occasions:

  • "Obviously, as you know, Syria is Iran’s only Arab ally in the region. Syria is the route that allows Iran to supply Hezbollah with weapons in Lebanon. Syria is Iran’s route to the sea.” - Mitt Romney March 6, 2012 @ AIPAC
  • Then Romney, in highlighting the ties between the two countries, claimed that Syria “is also their route to the sea.” GOP debate in Arizona, Feb 22, 2012
  • "But Syria is very different than Libya. It is the only key ally for Iran, its route to the sea." - Mitt Romney Dec 21, 2011 @ MSNBC
  • “It is obvious Syria is Iran’s key ally, its path to the sea.” - Mitt Romney Feb 10, 2012 @ WaPo

Even if Romney means the Mediterranean Sea. Iran has 2 options to get there.

Option 1. Hoist their ships up on their shoulders and carry them either across Turkey which is a NATO country or Iraq which has a few American troops in it. If they survive that they carry on across war torn Syria to the Med and freedom!

Option 2. They launch a ship from anywhere on their 1500 mile coastline into the Arabian Sea. Sail round Saudi Arabia and through the Suez Canal into the Med.

I know what one I'd choose but these Middle Eastern dictators can sometimes do crazy things.

Iran wishes to destroy Israel. Iran already has plans to use Iraq as a highway by land into Israel. It is very difficult for Iran to move ships into the Mediterranean Sea from Iran. They have to go way around and pass through the Suez Canal. I am glad you posted this map because it helps you to visualize the process.

Just north of Israel is a naval base that was built by the former Soviet Union in the city of Tartus, Syria. With Syria as its ally this gives the Iranians an advantage of attacking Israel by land, sea and air. Without access to a naval base in the vicinity of Israel, in makes it much more unlikely that Iran could fight a sea war with Israel because of the logistics to move ships quickly and unnoticed into that area of operations. It also makes it easier for Iran to fight an air war with Israel.

So even though Iran can launch ships into the waters along its own coast doesn't mean that it can very easily move those ships into the Mediterranean sea. You have to look at the bigger picture.
