Confused between IRS tax return and 1040 form

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here on VJ and I'm very happy to find this site because it provides a lot of info that are very useful in everyone's journey. My query is regarding the 1040 form and IRS tax transcript. My fiancee and I have never heard of IRS tax transcript. But I happen to browse a review from someone during her interview and she mentioned there the documents that the pre-screener asked from her which includes the IRS tax transcript. Now I'm confused if it is really needed or not because from what I've known for the evidence of support documents, it doesn't mention about the IRS tax transcript. I only need to show the 1040, W2 forms, and employment letter. I just want to make sure if IRS tax transcript is really needed even if I already have my fiance's 1040 form. I would appreciate your reply regarding my question. thanks a lot.

You need either the tax form AND all W2's or the tax transcript. Some prefer the transcripts because they have all the info free, simple and easy.

Thank you so much for your reply. So either 1040 form and IRS transcript are ok. What my fiance has is the 1040 form so that will do. right?

if your filing for 1-129f the 1-134 you can use the most recent tax return,any other fileing it's best to use tax transcripts every thing is included w-2,s and proof that you filed your taxes with the IRS,

Thanks for your reply. Now I understand. We are filing the I-129 F and what my fiance has is only the most recent tax return(1040 form), so that will do right? I dont need both the 1040 form and IRS tax transcript.

I was with my fiance at her interview in Manila on October 11th. They asked for and kept recent 1040, W2, and tax transcript including my I-134. Also original NBI, Cenomar, and Birth Certificate.

Thanks for the reply. Your recent is 1040, w2 and tax transcript is 2011 right? Did you guys give your original 1040, w2 and tax transcript? Or photocopies are fine?

Yes, most recent 1040+W2s (2011) or IRS transcript (2011) for employed. Past 3 years for self-employed.
