The confusion comes as a result of drifting away from the real issue, which is that photocopies of supporting documents can be submitted with petitions and applications but a consular or immigration officer can request to see the 'original' document from which the photocopy was made at any time, so as to verify the photocopy.

The interview is a convenient venue for such verification and consular officers will often spot-check a document or two.

OK, just to make it clear to me: I (the USC) need to give my fiance an official, certified copy of my birth certificate and divorce decree so that he can bring that to his K-1 interview, right?

....

I have a question for you yodrak (another one, sorry but you're an expert)

So, if I get a certified copy of my birth certificate and send that to my fiance for his interview, will that be okay? I'm asking because the certified copy may be different from the "original" copy I sent with my I-129F petition. For the I-129F petition, I submitted a copy of the "original" birth certificate I have and if I get a certified copy, it may look different from this "original" copy. I know this is trivial, but I was wondering what you think.

No, I'm not an expert. My range of knowledge is quite limited.

I would send a few photocopies along with the newly issued certified birth certificate. Or have your fiance make a few photocopies when he receives it. If the consular officer asks for the certified birth certificate your fiance can hand over both the certified copy and a photocopy for the consular officer to keep to update the file.

The information should be the same on both the new and the old, right?

so some embassies want to see the USC's birth certificate?

I have only been asked to provide my own birth certificate. All they said they want from the USC is the affidavit and certified copies of former marriages/divorces.

04/13/06 - I-129F mailed

04/18/06 - NOA1

08/30/06 - NOA2

09/26/06 - received at NVC

09/27/06 - forwarded to consulate

20/11/06 - visa in my pocket!

14/01/07 - POE

13/04/07 - marriage

27/04/07 docs sent in for AOS, EAD, AP

26/06/07 - biometrics appointment

02/17/07 - AP and EAD arrive

03/03/08 - Infopass - where the heck is my AOS interview?? No one knows!

Don't forget that when the interview comes, the officer may require for you to show any of the original documents submitted with the I-129F initial petition, the birth certificate of the petitioner is one of them. This is just a big MAYBE, since they can ask for any of the originals of anything submitted.
