What do you do about those crucially impt. original documents that you have, when they are asking that you send them to Morocco, in my case. Are you supposed to send your passport and divorce dicree, and documents such as that. Please give me your thoughts.

Sincerely,

Carol

copies of your passport will be fine, but the divorce decrees must be a certified copy. If you are sending your original copies, write down the case numbers so you can get another if needed for anything else and keep a photocopy for yourself.

Send a photo copy of passport. And Certified copy of divorce Decree.

If your divorce happened in San Francisco go to the Office of the Assessor-Recorder and get a certified copy of the divorce Decree there. If else you may be able to take your original to the assessor's office and get a certified copy made there.

Does the fiance being interviewed need a certified copy of the divorce decree? I thought that was provided in the K-129 petition and not needed thereafter?

I have a copy of the "Final Decree of Dissolution of Marriage" document with a stamp that says "Endorsed" and the district court name and address with the endorsement date. It doesn't have a raised seal or notary signature, though. I wonder if that's enough?

You only need photocopies for the K-129, but at the interview they MUST be certified copies (not photocopies of a certified).

Carol,

When obtaining certified copies of documents such as birth certificates or divorce certificates, get several copies not just 1.

So is it best to send our fiances a certified copy of our birth certificate, rather than send the original one to them? I thought it was best to send the original birth certificate to them because in their interview, they may be asked to show the original.

ucla_cutie,

You do not have the original to send - the registrar of vital statistics (by whatever name it goes where you are) has it. What you have is a certified copy.

Oh okay, then all I have to do is simply go to the registrar and order a certified copy of my birth certificate and send that to my fiance, right?

ucla_cutie,

Yes.

But just out of curiosity, what did you use as the 'original' to make the photocopy you submitted with your petition?

Yodrak,

For my petition, I made a copy of the birth certificate I have (the one I thought was original). I thought it was considered orignal and I even labelled it, "This is a copy of my original birth certificate (front side)" and then I copied the back of it and labelled it that it was such. Oh yeah, and I made a color copy of it at work. I actually thought this was considered the original since it is very very old, it's kinda brown and old looking, so I actually thought that was the original. :P I'm such a dork. But then again, I also included a copy of my entire passport, yes I exaggerated and inlcuded all pages of it to show passport stamps. So maybe that's why I never got an RFE for this stuff.

ucla_cutie,

What you have most people would reasonably call 'the original'. In many types of discussion it makes no difference, just a question of semantics. Here it make some difference, semantics can sometimes be important, because you've got to send something and I can understand why you would not want to send that document that you have. (Sentimental value and things like that?) So order up a couple of new certified copies (which may look different) to have available for immigration and other potential purposes where you might need to give something more 'official' than a photocopy.

OK, just to make it clear to me: I (the USC) need to give my fiance an official, certified copy of my birth certificate and divorce decree so that he can bring that to his K-1 interview, right?

In the case of the birth certificate: if I am in Ghana at the time of my fiance's interview, can I send him in with my actual passport rather than a certified copy of my birth certificate? (In the K129 petition I sent copies of all pages of my passport as well as a copy of a copy of my birth certificate.)

Sorry: getting confused! Thanks for any advice!
