Hi there!

Me and my husband just got married and are now ready to send in our I-130 package! :) He is American and I am Canadian. We both live in border towns so it is very easy to visit each other. Will I be allowed entry into the states to visit him while our visa is processing? Or will that result in denial of my green card and we will have to start the whole process again? Thanks for your help!!

Our journey:

September 2007: Met online via social networking site (MySpace); began exchanging messages.
March 26, 2009: We become a couple!
September 10, 2009: Arrived for first meeting in-person!
June 17, 2010: Arrived for second in-person meeting and start of travel together to other areas of China!
June 21, 2010: Engaged!!!
September 1, 2010: Switched course from K1 to CR-1
December 8, 2010: Wedding date set; it will be on February 18, 2011!
February 9, 2011: Depart for China
February 11, 2011: Registered for marriage in Wuhan, officially married!!!
February 18, 2011: Wedding ceremony in Shiyan!!!
April 22, 2011: Mailed I-130 to Chicago
April 28, 2011: Received NOA1 via text/email, file routed to CSC (priority date April 25th)
April 29, 2011: Updated
May 3, 2011: Received NOA1 hardcopy in mail
July 26, 2011: Received NOA2 via text/email!!!
July 30, 2011: Received NOA2 hardcopy in mail
August 8, 2011: NVC received file
September 1, 2011: NVC case number assigned
September 2, 2011: AOS invoice received, OPTIN email for EP sent
September 7, 2011: Paid AOS bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 9, 2011)
September 8, 2011: OPTIN email accepted, GZO number assigned
September 10, 2011: Emailed AOS package
September 12, 2011: IV bill invoiced
September 13, 2011: Paid IV bill (payment portal showed PAID on September 14, 2011)
September 14, 2011: Emailed IV package
October 3, 2011: Emailed checklist response (checklist generated due to typo on Form DS-230)
October 6, 2011: Case complete at NVC
November 10, 2011: Interview - APPROVED!!!
December 7, 2011: POE - Sea-Tac Airport

September 17, 2013: Mailed I-751 to CSC

September 23, 2013: Received NOA1 in mail (receipt date September 19th)

October 16, 2013: Biometrics Appointment

January 28, 2014: Production of new Green Card ordered

February 3, 2014: New Green Card received; done with USCIS until fall of 2023*

December 18, 2023:  Filed I-90 to renew Green Card

December 21, 2023:  Production of new Green Card ordered - will be seeing USCIS again every 10 years for renewal

#1 questions asked here in the canada forums---1000's of posts on it!! Short answer is yes!!! Majority of Cdns have no problems at all! But some do get turned back!! All comes down to the POE officer and how you handle urself. Ensure you bring ties to Canada with you, to help prove that you will be returning to Canada!! My 2 cents is listed below in my signature!! VJ is slow on the weekends--so to get more responses---do a search on VJ!! You may have to play with the wording on the search, but there are 1000s of posts on this! It gets asked every week,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Congratulations on your marriage. My wonderful wife is Canadian, I live in a US Border town as well, so I pop up often to see her and vice versa (I am actually writing this from Canada).

As long as you keep your day count below the limit you should be fine. We've been doing this for 7 months since getting married. She visits me for a while, and I visit her for a while so we keep the counts down. We have not been apart for more than a week since getting married.

Make sure you follow the guidelines posted on CR1 forum so it goes smoothly.

Good luck with your adventure… be patient this takes about 8 months to complete.

Border couple here too! My husband always keeps evidence of strong ties to Canada when he's coming to US (electric/propane bills, phone bills, visa statements for proof that he uses his visa in canada regularly, pay stubs from his job in canada), he comes across a time or two a week and has had no problems so far. He has been asked for the evidence, but other than that--no problems *knock on wood*! We were nervous when we started the process as well. Good luck! :thumbs:
