And people think we marry them because they're beautiful.

I'm surprised you're not getting yelled at. "Why you must wear dirty street clothes on clean sofa?"

The funny thing about street/home clothes that I'll never understand is guests wear clothes and (gasp!) even shoes in the house. How come they're not dirty?

Yes, Alla does the clothes changing or clothes losing thing when she comes home. Usually right in the entry hall or at best, the kitchen. Guests wear shoes in your house????????? Alla has a bunch of cheap tapochka for guests, no one wears shoes in the house without getting the ol' stinky eye! Alla usually wears a thin robe or nothing at all when at home. The robe doesn't cover much, especially no tif she does things like walk around or bend. :D It is a burden to bear

People wear their shoes in our house.

Her Russian friends are trained but the casual house guest has no idea. Nor does she give them a hard time. Oh how times have changed.

All carpet was removed from our house before Alla would live there, and replaced with harwood or ceramic tile, plus new cabinets and ceramic tile in our bathroom. She is opposed to any "fabric" on the floor ("it smells bad") that cannot be removed and beaten (small rugs). Still no shoes allowed.

The previous owners had installed a new acrylic wall system in the shower after they moved out to make the bathrrom look better. Alla hates acrylic walls in the shower/tub. When we viewed the house, she looked in the bathroom and said to me "you will change it"...and I did, before she moved in. The acrylic wall set was never used! The previous owner could have saved me time by stripping the old walls to the studs and leaving them. Alla would rather have plywood sub-floor than carpet to walk on.

We wear shoes all over the house. At this point Vika is pretty good about covering food and putting it in the refrigerator (MIL is not  ). Any wardrobe issues were dealt with years ago mostly. No one walks around in their underwear generally, and I wear gopnik clothes when I want to. In the house or out. Vika does not wear mini skirts or see through clothes. The issue for us is just conforming to the culture, and I appreciate her making the effort.

It looks like Dave took care of business (good on him), despite the usual level of tactful disagreement here in the RUB forum.

I thought Olya was getting used to the idea that if shoes are reasonably clean they can be worn inside. Nope! I got an earful this weekend. I tried to counter with an argument regarding how much carpet soiling has occurred from the new puppy she wanted and the toddler spilling various things. That went nowhere. So no shoes inside! :(

Dudes, I'm sorry, sigh man, but in reading this, I'm glad to be married to an Ecuatoriana, si man.

However, this happened to a buddy of mine (not a VJ member, but also then-engaged to an Ecuatoriana): His then-fiancee arrived after something like 18 hours of flights with 3 or 4 transfers. She made a beeline for his closet and immediately began tossing out anything that she deemed ugly, worn out, etc.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Fortunately, I turned Mrs. T-B. on early to resale shopping. (We still overdo it there.) One benefit is that resale places have a smorgasbord of stuff, not just the brands & styles that the traditional resale stores want YOU to buy. I have a better wardrobe now than I ever did, and Mrs. T-B. is able to change hers out almost as frequently as she likes, si man.

Off-topic: Has everyone seen the thread in Off Topic about Mrs. T-B.'s studying for the citizenship exam?

Yep I introduced Alla to the Goodwill store here. Our local Goodwill stores get a lot of donations from local merchants of brand new out of season clothes. She will always make a stop there and then go to her favorite, TJ Maxx. She also likes garage sales for various merchandise. After her check up in Ukraine her doctor says she needs to walk every day and with the weather that it is here I went to a garage sale the next day and bought her a $600 treadmill (new price) for $80. Nice gift when she got back.

Incidentally, Macy's has great off season sales and I will soon be able to start wearing the sweaters Alla bought me at Macy's for $7 each in May.

Yep, that's one of my wife's favorite stores too. Right behind Saks Fifth Ave and Neiman Marcus. Oh yes, let's not forget Bergdorf Goodman in NYC!

OUCH!

And I wonder why she hides the credit card bill when it arrives.

One of the things that attracted me to my wife was the simple life she led in Russia. Of course she had no closet in her apartment and just a small wardrobe with a few pair of shoes and a few dresses, etc. Boy did I get fooled. I just did not understand the how and why of Russian life.

Our master bedroom has two separate closets, but now she wants to remodel and convert the bedroom next to the master into her private closet! I'm not kidding. These are NOT small rooms, it's a large house.

Oh, I'm in big trouble.
