Doesn't this like happen every year around this time?

Philippines are really now prone to floods cuz of the quarry and garbage

disposal to bodies of water.. now its getting back during the rainy season.

actually no typhoons at this moment.. just heavy monsoon rain.

Yeah, the wife says she hated the flood, and the mosquitoes. The water backs up, with the trash, and the sewage, then the mosquitoes begin to swarm like a cloud everywhere. Not exactly a healthy way to live.

Well in the part of Las Pinas where she lives they hardly get any flooding. This is the first time she said they had 7 to 8 feet of water in the house. When I was there in Sept of 2010 Manila was under 15 plus feet of water but las Pinas had hardly any flooding. So if you never went through this I guess you would be concerned......

where does your wife live? well, depends on what area you live, if live near river then lots of mosquito

and if you don't clean your surroundings that's another cause for mosquito around. this is a tropical

country anyways so expect mosquito, bugs and other insects around. all you need to do is keep your

area/house clean always. :)

She was living in Sampaloc, Metro Manila. All the trash in the streets clog the storm drains, and the stuff they dump in the Pasig causes that to overflow its banks as well. And then the sewers start backing up. Nasty stuff.

We currently live near a river in northern California. The same thing happens nearby and the roads can close during a severe storm due to flooding. Folks around here are a bit more sanitary, and they control the mosquitoes by spraying and other means, but a big flood still leaves a nasty mess. She has been here five years, and not seen the river do its worst yet.

so she's near the Pasig Dump Site.. well I am from Iloilo(Visayas) and there are areas that get floods

we just make sure we clean our surroundings often as needed. and have my daughter use mosquito repellant

but lately not much mosquitoes anymore. Let's just pray that this bad weather in the Philippines will stop

cuz people who are affected are really helpless. :innocent:

Yes it happens every year because the government doesn't do anything about the issues. But not the time to get into that.. But since you're on the subject of mosquito's, my friend and his son just had Denge fever and they got it in the province down in San Andres. It is a very wet rainy season and many cases.. That's why I elected to wait on the province visit, plus we couldn't get there in the boat anyway...

Blame the hippies for giving DDT a bad name. It really is safe to use, inexpensive to make and disperse, and extremely effective.

I would suggest you get your facts straight. Its not a 'hippie' issue.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture, the federal agency with responsibility of regulating pesticides before the formation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1970, began regulatory actions in the late 1950s and 1960s to prohibit many of DDT's uses because of mounting evidence of the pesticide's declining benefits and environmental and toxicological effects. Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring in 1962 stimulated widespread public concern over the dangers of improper pesticide use and the need for better pesticide controls.

In 1972, EPA issued a cancellation order for DDT based on adverse environmental effects of its use, such as those to wildlife, as well as DDT’s potential human health risks. Since then, studies have continued, and a causal relationship between DDT exposure and reproductive effects is suspected. Today, DDT is classified as a probable human carcinogen by U.S. and international authorities. This classification is based on animal studies in which some animals developed liver tumors.

DDT is known to be very persistent in the environment, will accumulate in fatty tissues, and can travel long distances in the upper atmosphere. Since the use of DDT was discontinued in the United States, its concentration in the environment and animals has decreased, but because of its persistence, residues of concern from historical use still remain.

Also:

People exposed to DDT while working with the chemical or by accidental exposure report a prickling sensation of the mouth, nausea, dizziness, confusion, headache, lethargy, incoordination, vomiting, fatigue, and tremors.

One of the breakdown products of DDT, DDE3, causes thinning of eggshells in birds. This almost wiped out the Eagle populations here in the US.

Blame the hippies for giving DDT a bad name. It really is safe to use, inexpensive to make and disperse, and extremely effective.

Like I said, blame the hippies for junk science, who think it is better to have an issue, than prevent disease in the poorer areas of the world. How many children have died because of a mistaken impression that you continue to propagate?

The United Nations’ World Health Organization has finally backed off, somewhat, in its resolute ban of DDT. But still, upward of 1 million people die every year in the world’s poorest regions, mostly children under the age of 5, from a preventable disease.
