I don't think some of the posters seem to understand that this is a region specific question. In Vietnam, getting engaged on the first in-person meeting is usually taken as a sign of immigration fraud by the US consulate.

Yes, her friend is a US citizen. I guess he is just so excited about the girl that he can't wait.

Put Gowon in the "it's a disaster waiting to happen" line.

But I still wish them the best of luck though.

if you think it's going to be a disaster, don't wish them the best of luck...that would only make things worse. wish the CO will blue ball them and AP them for a couple years until they figure things out. i try not to be nice around here, you serve them better by being realistic (like 20/21 yr old coming here asking for marriage advice to a complete stranger from another country).

...and i agree with you gowon that's why i put up a jerry maguire reference.

1) Well...luck as in winning the lottery and/or an aged relative kicking the bucket and leaving them a nice tidy sum

2) In Off Topic, Politics and Religion forums, yes, but I don't want to be placed in AP by the mods now do I? rofl.gif

OP your friend should wait until he gets a job before he marries Vietnam is very hard to get by if you are jobless. I am not saying that it is impossible but it is less than 1% chance that he will get approve. Your friend's family should sit down and rationalize with him.

Those of us that have been through it know how the CO looks at the scenario and compares it to VN tradition... How often do you see a VN girls family agreeing to her marrying a MAN with no job? (in VN) I can see how the family would have the perception that US=$ but if we put it in real perspectives like if they were two people from and in VN, how much support would the relationship get from family?

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
