Who to ask?

Hi all,

My fiance and I have completed the waiting/back-and-forth game known as "Getting a K-1 visa". I'm probably not moving until september, to give me a chance to complete my work contract and get things in order. However, I have questions that I'm not sure if this forum can answer or not, regarding working and taxes. Did any of you go to an accountant or lawyer? Are there any other places I could ask immigration questions? My biggest question right now is whether I can do contract work from the USA to Canada with the company I am working for, or if that's nixed by a lack of EAD as well (we're not getting married until October so it will be months before I have authorization to work in the US). Not sure how filing taxes works when you've moved, either.

Yes, I believe I remember krikit saying she did this. Based on her previous posts, I don't think there are any issues with it. As far as taxes are concerned, you also may want to ask Neiks. She lives in the US but works in Canada. Otherwise, an accountant should be able to help you navigate it.

You just have to make sure you file "exit taxes" and notify them when you leave (exact date) to cancel your GST/HST credits.

Thanks, I sent her a PM.. The forum looks interesting, but I think I'll wait on trying it for now. Should probably be making more phone calls at work too because everything is closed by the time I get home (has been a pain trying to figure out what I will do for health insurance until I can go on my fiance's plan).

I think I saw that post recently.. I've also found a couple of Canadian companies that offer expatriate insurance - The Cooperators and ETFS. I'm probably going to check them out first, because at least the first one sounds familiar.. I've also contacted NRIOL and bookmarked patriot platinum. I should be able to get on my fiance's insurance after we're married but it is good to fill the gap in between.
