Hi all. I got my visa in hand today (YAY!) Anyway, I am starting to think about POE. I have a little too much stuff for my car and am looking at having my fiance come down and rent a car and use that as well for POE. My question is: as long as he is directly behind me will I be ok? Does he need to have any paperwork with him? Has anyone done this at the Ambassador Bridge by chance?

Aos:

10-01-12. Sent AOS, AP and EAD

10-09-12- Recieved NOA's for forms

10-24-12- Successfully walked in for biometrics (originally scheduled for 11-08-12)

11-26-12- Made info pass appointment for emergency advance parole. Denied, but agent called service center to request an expedite.

11-28-12- Agent at Infopass called me to let me know service center approved my request.

12-01-12- Advance parole received in the mail (2 page version, not combo card)

Many others have done it with family members and was never a problem. Ensure the car rental company allows the vehicle to enter Canada and you should be good to go. Just let the POE officer know the car behind you is with you and has YOUR personal belongings

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

They're going to have you go inside no matter what to get your stamp and process the visa, so I don't think this will be a problem at all. When my husband and I just crossed, we only had one car with the rest of his things in it, as I have most everything here in the states, and they were actually more concerned that we didn't have very much... LOL. So I would say having the standard amount of belongings would be great.

Also, we made an itemized list and were never asked for it. I even offered it up to all of the POE officers that we had to speak with and they just laughed and said "no thanks". It was a super easy process, and everyone was friendly for the most part.

Be prepared to wait for about an hour. We had to wait for 2 hours, because they lost the template they need to get fingerprints and a signature for the visa packet. :bonk:

As long as they have that, you should be out in about an hour or less.

Good luck! Welcome to the US!

I POE'd with two vehicles at the Peace Bridge in 2008. My then fiance was in the car behind me. I got pulled into secondary and they wouldn't let him pull in with me. He had to drive on. We hadn't planned for this. My POE took a long time (a couple of hours). He waited by the side of the road for about an hour. We left Toronto in the evening and had booked a hotel in Buffalo, so he eventually went ahead to the hotel without me and I arrived later.

I haven't heard of anyone else having this problem, so maybe it was a cranky border guy. But you might want to have a plan B, just in case.

His car was full of my stuff and they didn't care at all.

Very good to know! My fiance and I will be driving to his parents house in Illinois (about 6 hours drive) one day and then onto Minnesota the next. So if he had to drive on it wouldn't be horrible I guess. We both have cell phones. But it is good to know that!
