After the interview and if visa is granted how long is it valid for? The interview is going to be at the U.S embassy in Guatemala. Do we have to travel right away? Or can we wait a couple of months after the visa is issued?

Isn't it 6 months from date of the medical? I thought I remembered stories of people who had less than 6 months because of a gap between the medical and the interview.

In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

Initially filed for K1 visa - Feb 23 2012

Due to circumstances beyond our control, we've abandoned this application

We married on Aug 24, 2013 in a small ceremony in MA

We'll be applying for a CR1 / IR1 visa as soon as we are able

There will be an expiration date on the visa. Make certain to arrive in the US before the expiraton date--typically the K-1 visa is good for 6 months, but there have been exceptions so please check the date on YOUR visa to be certain.

Good luck,

Dave

The expiration date is generally six months or when the medical exam expires whichever occurs first.

If the medical will expires in 4 months, then the visa will be valid for 4 months. It expires the same day that the medical exam expires.

If the medical will expires in 9 months, then the visa will be valid for 6 months.

For those readers who are K-1-ers going through Manila:

The expiration date of your visa will be printed on your visa. That expiration date will be six months from the completion of your medical.

It appears maybe that different countries, the medical is good for different periods of time?

In the Philippines, the medical is good for six months. SO your visa will be issued to expire six months after the medical. Which means, no one in the Philippines would ever get a visa that is good for six months, since you have to have your medical BEFORE your interview, so everyone's visa will be for some period of time less than six months. Ours was good for four months, because we had our medical two months before the interview, since we then had to wait much longer than we were led to believe to get our police clearance from Thailand.
