what is a i-824

Ok we got an approval but I have not heard anything from anywhere.Am I supposed to file this I-824 my approval said my papers were forwarded to the consulate and they have yet to get it. The NVC says they dont have my papers and when I looked at this form it says a $405 fee to send my approved application to the nvc is this what I need to do please advise me anyone.

Call the State Department's visa information line at (202) 663-1225 and see if they have any information on your file. If you call the NVC again, don't ask them if they have your file, ask them if a case number has been assigned to the file. FYI, the NVC is only a mail stop for K1 cases, so they would not have your file for a long amount of time (a case number is assigned and the file is sent to the appropriate location overseas). No file ever goes directly to an Embassy or Consulate from USCIS despite what an approval notice states or what an operator might say.

I agree with Ryan about the short time NVC actually has the file (usually). If you have called the NVC and given them your information and they can't find you, they may have sent your file on before they have record in their system. Once you get your file number from NVC, then the embassy can tell you if they received it. It sometimes takes the embassy a while to get the files into their computer. I think we had a lag of a week or two between NVC saying the file went to the embassy in Kiev, and when the embassy was able to confirm receipt. Don't sweat it for a few days, just keep calling NVC.

As to your questions, it looks like what you are calling approval is an NOA2, right? I am not sure what you mean by I-824. Do you mean I-864 (Affadavit of Support) or I-134 (Affadavit of Support)? If so, we sent the I-134 with the application if I recall.
