What does a Co-Sponsor have to do?

Hi Everyone, I was thinking of getting a co-sponsor because I don't have a job yet. I was told this would make it easier for me. I was thinking of asking my sister to be the co-sponsor but I don't know whether she would do it or not. What do they require a co-sponsor to do? Does she have to give me any money? I know she won't want to do that. She has a very good job as a real estate agent and has had this job for several years. Does a co-sponsor just say that they'll help us out if we have financial troubles later on? How do I sell the idea to her? Thanks.

if you don;t have a job you have to do more than think about a co sponsor, you NEED one. You have to meet the minimum poverty income requirements to bring your fiance here. No job=no income= zero dollars. There are guides at the top of this page, you need to read and study them. Good luck!!!

Her obligations as a co-sponsor would be to provide support if needed to your fiance. More than likely she won't have to do anything, but in the case that your fiance gets govt means tested benefits, such as food stamps, the govt could ask her to pay them back. If you don't apply for benefits, then she won't have to do anything. Her only obligations she would have would be to pay back any means tested benefits your fiance would receive.

Does this mean that I cannot apply for any govt. benefits for myself even? I already apply for a free health ins. program for myself here in my state and get HEAP heating assistance. Should I drop all these programs for myself? Will they count that against me? So when we are married we are to never apply for anything like this or is it just food stamps? I don't get food stamps at all.

I'm not trying to be mean but why would you bring somebody when you can't even take care of your self??? Why not wait till you get yourself together?? I can understand a co- sponsor if you are short some what but in your case you are definitely not in a situation... Just my opinion !

YOU can apply for benefits, your fiance cannot. All the benefits you receive you should still be able to keep. I don't think it will hurt your case if you already are receiving them. They will be looking at the co-sponsor's information if you do not make enough. All they need to see is that there is enough money to support your fiance.
