Divorce decree copy

My fiance's lawyer promised us that he would give my fiance his divorce decree 2 weeks ago and still nothing. This is the only information I am waiting for. We asked the lawyer to scan a copy and send it to me which he still hasn't done. But I wanted a scan copy so I can start translating it and making sure it has the judges signature and stamp like his lawyer said. But I don't trust his lawyer after this. Is a scanned copy of the divorce decree acceptable?

Thank you for you help.

Your fiance can get the decree from the court without a lawyer. A copy is ok for petition, but original is needed for consulate.

You can get an original copy of the decree from the court. You need an original for the embassy, a copy can be sent at the USCIS stage. Unless your case is complicated you honestly don't need an attorney. If you follow the guides here at the top of the page you can easily do the whole process on your own. Not to mention the fact that if you have any questions, people in this forum are more than helpful. Good luck!!!

He already went to the court he needs the case number and he calls the lawyer over and over and he says I have it I'll bring it and nothing. We are in the first stage and I want to send everything out immediately that is why I want a copy. I am asking the lawyer to send a scanned copy and mail the original to my fiance since he is being annoyingly ridiculous about going to my fiance's home town. His latest excuse was "its raining i'm not coming out". I am just so happy I never got a lawyer for our K-1 process or I'd be dealing with this type of stuff.

I assumed this was for k-1 process as that is what your profile says. You husband can go to the court physically and get an original copy without a case number, they will just ask him for a photo id

Why are you wasting the money on a lawyer when you can do that yourself. If you chose to do it, it would have been done by now

By the way the op's initial post is worded, it sounds like she may be talking about her fiances divorce attorney, rather than an immigration attorney. Why would "her fiances lawyer" be holding his divorce decree if he was an immigration attorney?

The divorce case number should be on all the divorce documents, motions, agreement, filings etc... Yes, you need give the court your Divorce case number so they can look up your case and print and stamp the decree.

I did not hire an attorney for my K-1 visa. I am talking about my fiance's divorce attorney. We ended up telling the lawyer we were going directly to the court to pick it up and he arrived about 15 minutes later at my fiance's house dropping of the paper. Which I found funny since he was supposedly in a different city that is exactly why I didn't hire an attorney for our visa. But I have everything just waiting for it to come in the mail along with some more stuff and I am sending it out! :) Thanks for your help guys!

Yes, the lawyer knows once he goes to court himself, he will see how easy the post-divorce process is to do himself (Without him). (ie, further motions or modifications)
