I-129F Certificate Number Box

Maybe a little overly ####### to ask this, but why not?

On the example form of the I-129F here on visajourney:

http://www.visajourney.com/examples/INS-Form-I-129F.pdf

The box for certificate number under question 10 says:

(ONLY complete for naturalization certificate)

I have check marked "Birth in the US". Well, I already printed my form and have input the "file number" of my birth certificate, date, and place of issue in the box. Is this OK? Should I remove it? I am including a scan image of my birth certificate anyways. Anyone get in any trouble for having the BC number in this box?

Also, it would seem to me that only answering it for a naturalization certificate has been learned through experience as I can not find anywhere in the forms where it says to include the number only for a naturalization certificate. If I hadn't seen the example form, I would think I have followed the instructions. Sorry if I am being a bit too #######. Maybe it doesn't matter. Thanks.

That box is only for Naturalization certificate, since you were born in the US then nothing is needed there.

See example form here. http://www.visajourney.com/examples/INS-Form-I-129F.pdf

I learned this from a legal book from NOLO "Fiancé & Marriage Visas: A Couple's Guide to U.S. Immigration" http://www.nolo.com/product.cfm/ObjectID/E...610EDA/118/209/

as far as i know it's used for the Naturalization Certificate number. i have the same book and all the examples i've seen say the same thing. i don't know that it would create problem if your Birth Cert. number is entered there. if I had done the sme thing, I'd probably white it out. i made corrections to the G-325a's that way.

Thanks for the reference to the book. Sounds solid enough to me. I just was wondering how we knew this to be true. Also, I'm sure the example here has been successfully replicated with no problem.

I'll be re-printing with the box empty.

In reality your example provides you the answer. You are a USC by birth and therefore not a naturalized citizen and hence you do not complete...

YMMV

That particular question on the I-129F is not set out very well. If you look at the same question asked on the I-130 it lists 'birth in the US' and 'Naturalisation' beneath each other with the box for certificate number connected to the 'Naturalisation'. Not only is it from experiences that this is tried and tested to only put the certificate number in relation to Naturalisation, but lawyers also reference this on various websites. Other members though have put BC numbers with it causing no problem. I imagine the adjudicators see this quite a bit because of the way the question is laid out. There are other errors eg the instructions still mention 3/4 face for the passport photos, when it has been full frontal for a long time now. They just keep reprinting the same error.

All the best on your journey.
