Some weirdness... So, my fiance's interview went well and they took his passport and told him to go at 4PM and pick it up. So, he went and everyone except him and three other guys all got their big sealed packets and passports with visas, but the consular officer told MY fiance' and the other three to return tomorrow morning to pick theirs up. But... here's the alarming part... the CO wrote a note that says my fiance's name, "K-1 visa," and "front of line" and "Pick up visa" on the 221g denial form! #######?!? The CO told Jeti that since there were so many people there today, Washington was unable to process everything in time and since the consulate was closing for the day, he'll need to come back tomorrow morning at 8:30am. I'm just worried because he wrote that "pick up visa" note on the 221g denial form. Under reasons why the visa was denied, nothing is written in, and my fiance' (not knowing English and not knowing what the form said until I told him) thought he just quickly grabbed the paper and scribbled on it because it was close at hand. But why use the DENIAL slip and write "front of line" and "pick up visa" on it? Did we get the visa? lol. I feel like we DID, but... he wrote it on the 221g! Could he have just been using that as scrap paper? My fiance' told me that EVERYONE got a visa today, even this one guy who'd done time in prison for selling drugs in Florence... how can Jeti be turned down and not him!? I feel like he was just using it as scrap paper or something and he just needed to quickly write Jeti a note so he could quickly get in and out tomorrow morning, but... why use the DENIAL slip!?? To scare the cr@p outta people!? lol

I would bet that everything is OK, but if your fiance gets to the consulate tomorrow and there are inconsistencies, call the State Dept's visa department. You can search the forums for the number. I don't have it at hand.

Grazie amica ...I just talked today with my friends in Italy,they are from Firenze(my boss and his wife are great people and they have a daughter 27 years old,she was of big help cheering me up back in 2003 when I was out of a 5 years relationship.Great great people).And of course I made a huge`CASINO` on the phone congratulating them ,they didn`t go to Rome for the festivities these days but they were overjoyed,which I loved because they are always caught up with a lot of work work,one thing I learned from them is about work ethics ...I wouldn`t have missed Rome these days if I were them tho .

I'm also sad to see Alex go! We started talking in the last few days and she was very nice. Maybe she will come back once she has a little more free time?

My fiance' is due to arrive here in NYC (by means of his shiney new visa) in 6 days! I have a vacation coming up in August and we plan to go around NYC so he can learn the lay of the land and see ... you know... EVERYTHING!

KarenL, your fiance is flying home today! You must be beside yourself with excitement. ... Actually, I still remember the day of Antonio's flight. I was calm all day, but when I got to the airport, I started crying uncontrollably. It was such a wonderful relief to see him walk through those pneumatic doors. Sigh. I wish you an unforgettable reunion later today.

To everyone on or going on vacation, have fun! I have no vacation plans, though my husband is going back to Italy in 2 weeks for a few days. He's going to recharge his batteries before his GC interview. Plus, I get some downtime. Everyone wins :-D

Hi everyone. I'm so glad I found this site since this process seems to be more complicated than I'd ever imagined!

I'm American, married (in America) to an Italian almost 3 years ago, and living in Italy since. We now want to transfer to America and I obviously need to get DH's papers in order.

Sooooo, first step, submitting I.130 to the consulate in Rome. Where can I find a list of the supporting documents I'll need to provide? Or would it be a better idea for me to go to the consulate in person and ask them face-to-face? Fortunately, they're about 1.5 hours away from where I live.

Hi Breezy! I had actually printed out your letter from your entry in May to use as a guideline :-) Don't know if you know the answers, but I did have a few questions about it.

-Can the documents in Italian be translated by me or do they need to be certified-type translations?

-They want to be paid in USD, but where does one find those instruments (postal money orders, bank certified checks, etc.) while living in Italy?

-What is form NOTICE?

I'd also like to know once the visa is issued (hopefully!) for how long is it good? DH has to wrap things up here first before going to America and doesn't know precisely how long it will take.

I'm glad you had ran into my cover letter and documents needed, just to let you know I STILL haven't submitted the I-130, so anything you get from me hasn't been proven correct yet....

I'll try to be the best help I can though! You'll have to keep me updated on how things go for you two! And a congratulations to you two for finally starting the process, we've waited 3.5 years now, and finally seem to be getting closer to putting the darn thing in the mail!

Yes, you can translate the documents yourself, in the First Packet, along with the I-130, there will be a form "NOTICE", which says that you are competent to translate, and all the docs you sent are copies of the origionals and that the org's may be requested by an officer, and so on. Or, you could go for overkill, like I am tending to do...and add something like this at the end of each translated document...(example from visa journey guide)

The check...I'm sure there are other/better ways to do this. I don't know how we will be able to "track" this check, for timeline purposes, so we will just rely on the posta raccomandata. Anyway, if I am correct, the "certified check" in Italian is called an Assegno Piazzato, (assegno a pagamento garantito su una banca USA,)We found a Monte dei Paschi di Siena, you don't have to have an account with them to do this, and it took one day. Make sure the fee hasen't changed before you do this, I think the fee changes usually in Sept or Oct.

When your husband does the interview and is issued the visa, he will then have 6 months to go to a POE (Port of Entry) in the U.S. to activate the visa. The same day the visa is activated and the Brown Envelope is turned in, he may turn around and go right back to his home country to finsih up there. He shouldn't stay out of the U.S. for more than one year without a re-entr permit. And it is a good idea to always have proof of his intent to reside permenatly in the U.S. with him when he travels to Italy for longer stays.

Wow! You are so much better informed than I am. Thanks so much for your clarifications.

I'm going to call the consulate and see if there's any way I can get a copy of the form NOTICE without going all the way over to the consulate. Ideally I'd like my first trip there to be for the intent of handing in my first packet.

I also think we're going to try to just go the cash route, I think DH can get USD at a decent price through a bank here.

And what's a Brown Envelope? After the visa is issued and activated, will he be able to make short trips outside the U.S. (for say 2 weeks at a time) for personal reasons like visiting his family or vacations without a special permit to leave and return? Or is it that each time he wanted to leave he'd have to ask permission?

I'll definitely keep you up to date on our (hopeful) progress :-))))
