Hello, I am in need of some advice. I am an American citizan and my fiance is Nigerian. We are trying to find the best and quickest way to be together, (to get him to the United States). I have heard that the fiance visa takes 6 months and if we got married abroad that it would take even longer for him to get here?? I would like to know what has worked for anybody? Or what would be the best option? :help:

Thanks,

Thanks,

1. how and when did you meet?

2. how much time together in person, and when?

3. what are your ages?

Without this information, it is difficult to guess your best path. It might be K1, or it might be live in Nigeria together for 1 year then marry...??? This all depends on above questions.

The fiance visa process takes usually more than 6 months. There are 2 major steps in this process: applying for a petition (you, the US citizen would do that) and apply for the visa at the consulate after the petition is approved (your nigerian fiance would be the one applying). The petition stage usually takes 4-6 months, and add a few more months to that for the consulate stage.

The Lagos consulate is known to be very difficult so be prepared for it and have a LOT of evidence of your bonafide relationship (have you met several times?.. and other questions L+T wrote).

You moving to Nigeria would be much quicker.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

The fiance visa runs more like 8 months to over a year, almost all Nigerian males will also be placed on AP for a while after the interview. There is a significant failure rate of first attempts so you can't count on a set timeline. If you have the signed paperwork you could start a fiance visa today, a CR1 requires that you marry before you start.

This will not be over quickly. You will not enjoy this.

Mine was K1 visa. IT was almost a year for me because of RFE (that took longer) but usually it takes 5-6 months. Either way, its your choice. yes.gif

I pettitioned my husband with a CR1 visa and it took almost 10 months with an RFE. What I wanted to say in my opinion the time difference between fiance and spouse visa is very small 2 or 3 months but with the CR1 its cheaper and you get your permanent status as soon as you enter the country. The only thing you will have to worry is getting the 10 year green card. With that said as others have said you should take some advice from people who actualy go through the embassy in Nigeria.
