See, no problem at all. I don't see the fuss that people are making about attending the oath. What does it matter if you'll be sworn in a few months later. You still have your GC up to then.

Tell that to the people who got lost in the system and have waited over a year...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

I agree that rescheduling is never prefered and it could potentially add months to your application. However, in my opinion it is worth rescheduling if you happen to be somewhere else for a good reason which a wedding of a close friend (not just anybody) would be. I would have done the exact same thing for people who are close to me.

Getting lost in the system could happen to all of us also to the ones who did not postpone the process. Trying to obtain a passport at the last minute involves a similar risk. Something could go wrong there too.

Of course everything is case-dependent, right? For example, I see that you are from the Netherlands and hence, you do not have any problems traveling among EU countries for example. In my case, I had to get a US passport ASAP since otherwise with my "original" country citizenship, many EU countries required a transit or tourism visa whenever I traveled through Europe and it was always a very big hassle for me. So even a few months delay of getting the US passport was a very big deal for me.

A wedding of a close friend is a big thing, but in my opinion not a reason to delay US citizenship. If you have a medical or family emergency, that I understand. I do not know what the OP's original citizenship is, but even if it is from a EU country, I would still recommend to attend the oath at the scheduled date.

And regarding the same-day or expedited passport, I am repeating what I posted before: It is not a big deal. If you have proof of travel, they will issue it to you at a passport agency.

I won't start any USCIS process unless I'm sure that I can see it through to the end without leaving the country.

I see many posts here from people who aren't even in the country but want their green card or citizenship.

You have a wedding of a friend to attend or your oath ceremony. I guess only you can decide which is more important.

I won't mess with the USCIS because once you start rescheduling appointments it really drags out the process and it's long enough to get things done without adding to it.

I've had my unconditional green card for some 8 years now and have only just decided to go for my citizenship (obviously before my 10 year green card expires). I told my family back in Australia that I would not be traveling anywhere until all this is over and they understand.

You have up to 10 years to decide if you want to become a citizen. Pick a time and do it when you will be here to follow it through to the end without needing to leave the country in the middle of the process.

As others have noted you can of course reschedule but it will slow the process and increase the chances of your files or information being lost in the shuffle. It does happen sometimes. I personally won't risk upsetting the applecart once I'm in the system for a process.

Good luck!
