Hi Everyone,

I just got my employment authorization card today! woot woot! I can finally work. I just have question after question now.

1. Can I work right away or do I have to apply for my social security card?

2. Is the USCIS number on the card my temp social security number? I'm just asking because I started to apply for online jobs and they need a SSN.

3. What do I do now? Can I start establishing credit? Getting a drivers license?

Thank you for your help!

You can't work until you get your SSN. It should be pretty quick to get your SSN though. Most SSN offices will give you your SSN number same day on a regular paper print-out which you can use to apply for work, they then mail you the actual Card a week or 2 later...Congrats and Good luck with Job search.

I'm just a little confused. I went onto the advised welcome to US immigrant website linked onto the letter given to me with my EA card and it said this:

You do not need to fill out an application or go to a

Social Security office to get a Social Security number if:

• You asked for a Social Security number or card when

you applied for an immigrant visa AND

• You applied for an immigrant visa in October 2002

or later AND

• You were age 18 or older when you came to the

United States

You must go to a Social Security office to get a SSN if:

• You did not ask for a Social Security number or card

when you applied for an immigrant visa OR

• You applied for your immigrant visa before October

2002 OR

• You were under age 18 when you came to the U.S

I fall into 2 out of the 3 from the "You do not need to fill out" category.

Any input?

K-1 entrants have to go to the SSN office and get an SSN.

You cannot get health insurance , drivers license, car insurance, on a bank account or a job without it.

You were a K-1 correct? That is a non-immigrant visa, so you need to go to the office and apply.

The USCIS number is your "A" number, which will be on your GC and will be used when corresponding with USCIS. It is not a temp SSN.

Congrats on getting the card!

Yes, I'm a K-1.

In order to apply do I need to bring two bills with my name and address on it? Or just passport, EA card?

Thanks!

The First Case refers to questions43A and 43B in form DS-230 where they ask if you would like to be issued with a SSN. If you answered yes then I gues you just have to wait for them to send you one. If you fall in the second category as you said then you will have to go to the SSN office. It may not be of any harm for you to visit an SSN off to verify if you are not sure, except for the long line ofcourse....I hope this helps. I am attaching the link to form DS-230 if you want to read questions 43A and 43B http://travel.state.gov/pdf/DS-0230.pdf

Not totally true...I got on my husbands health insurance and on his car insurance before I had my SSN. I think that depends on the State or the job. the only thing I was told about car insurance was that I had to get my State ID within 12 months of being added to his insurance.

This is incorrect. K-1 entrants will not be issued an SSN on arrival ever. Even if you select to be issued one you will not be issued one.

They didn't ask me a lot of questions, but they told me they needed time to verify my status and that it could take up to a month as well. I think it's probably a standard thing.

Geico forced me to put my husband on my insurance knowing he does not have a license or live in the country >=[

It was SO weird. Nothing wrong with it, it actually lowered my insurance, but at the time, I was driving and just trying to get my info updated with them as fast as possible then I had to go through adding him as well.

That's perfectly normal. It usually doesn't take more than 2 weeks, provided everything checks out fine. They did it to me when I got my first card and when I changed my name on the card.

I know its weird, but that's really common. Generally, if you're married companies require you to add or exclude your spouse even if they live elsewhere and/or have their own insurance. But it usually helps your rate unless he/she has a bad driving record. I guess its one less thing to do later!

It wasn't so much that they wanted him on there, just that didn't want to be doing it while driving down a 6 lane wide highway through the outskirts of Chicago. I had changed my bank account and my new bank account had my new last name on it and I was afraid that weird things would happen if they tried to pull the payment out under my old last name when it wasn't associated with my account.

Then it turned into a whole conversation of adding my husband on.

At the time, I had a crappy car with only liability on it so first she's like 'your payment per month is $36.55' and then after adding my husband she was like 'your payment is now 34.82 per month! see! It's a good thing we added him! It went down!' and I'm like 'yeah okay lady, not that exciting' :bonk:
