Hi LeftCoastLady. Because of this thread - http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/101491-police-clearance-certificate/ - I am very confused on what I actually need for a police certificate and who I go through to get it. Are you sure a criminal record will be sufficient?

Well, if you want to follow that advice (from 2007), go for it. You may want to post this question in the NZ forum to get more up to date thoughts. I just did a search on Google.

It is all there is. No such thing as a police certificate exists in NZ.

I can explain it to you. But I can't understand it for you.

Fair enough. :) One last thing though, this site - http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_5455.html?cid=9696 - says to mail to Privacy Officer, Department of the Courts. This is different than the address that was given in replies. Which one should I use? Nothing like confusion...

Is it ok if she personally applies for her criminal record? The one on the travelgov site says that it cannot be personally requested. Does it need to be requested through the Embassy or NVC or what?

EDIT - I'm just confused if I should use the address listed here - http://travel.state.gov/visa/fees/fees_5455.html?cid=9696 or here - http://www.justice.govt.nz/services/criminal-records/get-a-copy-of-your-criminal-record

If you are in NZ, and interviewing at that consulate, they have to get the clearance for you. I think that is what is confusing to you, as your fiancee is interviewing elsewhere I believe?

On this address, clicking on the blue link takes you to the PDF to print out.

Also, on this page there is a link to an email address where you can contact them to ask any questions:

Ahhh, yea that was confusing. So the travelgov thing is for people in NZ, my fiance is applying at Japan embassy, so I should use the site you supplied.

You can email them to double check if you like, or ask any questions you may have. All the best!

I'm fairly sure what you supplied is what I want. I'll have her ask for it and later ask the embassy if it's ok. If they want anything else then they will have to request it for her so it should be fine.

They would not accept the justice letter when I did my K1 through Australia. They said that only they can request it from the NZ Police and held up the issuing of my visa while they did. Luckily it only delayed things a few weeks.

From what I have read, only the embassy can request the police certificate from NZ for you, but that could be Australia specific. Best to ask your embassy what the requirements are so you don't waste the time getting the wrong one.
