No one says 'ay' at the end of each sentence. It's not used like the American 'eh', to indicate a question, but for the life of me I can't figure out how it works. It's a very strange usage, but in any case, the Canadian accent out west sounds like someone in Wyoming or Colorado and there's not a lot of 'eh's'.'

I definitely don't say eh, but my husband does (grew up in suburb of Toronto) and my parents do (vancouver island)... I always used to think it was a rural thing, but now I don't know.

The one person I've met who says it more than anyone else is from a small town in Alberta :)

Heh. My fiancé's from a small town in Alberta and practically no one in his area says it. Either way, it's not universal, and it isn't an 'ay'. :)

I say "eh" every now and then. It pops out and shocks me. It seems to happen at the end of sentences. I can't control it. But it is in no way a regular part of my vocabulary.

On the subject of language, I have noticed that my fella and his family/friends never use the "ly" suffix in some adverbs. They say "it came natural". "It ran quick". It drives me nuts! I complained to a friend about it once, and she said "He's being presidential!" hee.

Not that I am the grammar police or anything, but that one is so glaringly... country music!

The only thing I miss about Canada is Ketchup chips. Oh and the fact I can get good wild rice in a bag at any grocery store there (unlike here where it's just boxed style with a bit of rice and seasoning)...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

For desis, there is also the availability of unsweetened grated coconut (a small amount adds taste to many dishes). In Canada, you can get this at convenience (the size belies the term "convenience") or regular (Co-op, RCS) grocer. In US, you need to go to ETHNIC grocers (sweetened grated coconut is available in regular grocer, but is a disaster when used as above; even for dessert usage, IMO, unsweetened is far better).

Goodness, you're right. I can't think of anywhere around here that sells unsweetened coconut. Maybe at the Chinese grocery.

My family visited me in late October and asked me if they could bring me anything. Guess what the #1 thing on my list was??? You betcha. I'm now prosperous in unsweetened coconut. :D

(I also got mint chocolate chips from them for baking, which are impossible to find here...I looked for them everywhere last year during the holiday season and there were none to be had. Imagine my surprise last weekend when I found them at the local store. I'm busy buying them out...)

You know, I had one from Canada I brought with me...and can't find it anywhere. It's with my "don't lose" stuff and well, it's apparently put away VERY safely. ;)
