I give the credit to Alla's Mom, a fomrer Soviet District Civil Engineer. She was tutoring Sergey in math since before he could go to school. I also give him a lot of credit for sticking to it and making long range decisions, nit whatever is most fun for today.

I am encouraging him toard some sort of government work. If you know of any other scholariships that would be great. He has tuition, stipend and a job paying a small salary but anything else would be great! The school sent him soem addl info also.

Rice now has one of the best International studies degree programs in the country also. They had a good one but James Baker came in and made it among the highest regarded.I know one girl who got her degree and is now working for the state department. I remember her final year when many global companies were embarassing themselves trying to recruit her.The money offered her was amazing and almost made her change her plans from working for State.

I have discused this with Sergey and private companies can make tempting offers to be sure. He will be 24 years old (possibly 23) when he gets a doctorate. He could work for the government for 20 years, retire with a 50% pension and then land a job as a consultant of board of directors, being semi-retired and very well off in his mid-late 40s! I don't suppose I will see it but it is a nice thought.

But this is exactly what I discussed with him also. He has been dealt a wonderful handful of cards and if he lays them off right he is going to do very well for himself and his family. Be cool, man, be cool. Don't be jumping after that extra $8000 per year now and lose an extra $50,000 in the future. Do NOT go for door number 3!

It is. And if you HAVE kids, as you do now Tbone, it is THE major thing. I see people that for them their kids are "competitors" taking from them what they could have. Pissed off that they do not have a bass boat because they have children to "pay for"! The great thing about kids is they will keep you very busy for a very long time and if you can enjoy that for what it is (and it IS great) then you will be the happiest man in the world. The only thing most of us can ever do to make a difference in this world after we get put in the ground is to produce and raise some good kids. That is more than a cliche. That's where I invest all our money. My portfolio is four great sons.

And if you and your wife agree that "this is our job" and you both are willing to make it priority number 1, you are golden!

That is what she decided also but she wanted to work for State for about 10 years then move into a Global corporations International division. I think that is a great idea. Good that he understands to look at the future rather then the now.

One of his friends from Donetsk is a foreign student at UT Austin. So he has been hearing all the great Texas stories via skype. He says his friend is "probably less interested in studying than I am"

I agree. When you have been through a major surgery and you wake up after an induced coma and the faces you see are your wife and children, then the rest of the world can go f**k themselves. If you can figure that out without going to that point, so much the better.

You and your wife have created this little guy who thinks you are the only important people in theworld. Funny how a little kid that cannot walk or talk figures out what is important in life and older people lose sight of it.
