NEW YORK: Unfazed by his detention at a New York airport by US immigration authorities for a couple of hours, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, joked about the incident later at Yale University, where he was honoured as a Chubb Fellow.

Khan, who has millions of fans in India and around the world, was detained at New York's White Plains airport, about 35 miles from New York, when he arrived Thursday on a private plane along with Nita Ambani, wife of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani.

While Ambani, whose student daughter Isha is president of the South Asian Society at the university, and the rest of their group were cleared immediately, Khan was allowed to go only after his hosts intervened and took up the issue with the Department of Homeland Security in Washington, according to sources.

Later talking to students, Khan, dressed in a chic black suit thanked Ambani for getting him to the US after a long flight. Then he was "detained at the airport as always", said Khan adding with a smile, "It was nice, as it always happens."

"Whenever I start feeling too arrogant about myself, I always take a trip to America. The immigration guys kicked the star out of stardom," he said.

But he always has his "small victories" even in such circumstances, said Khan, who was detained at New York's Newark International airport in August 2009 too when he arrived to take part in an Independence Day event in Chicago.

"They (immigration officials) always ask me how tall I am and I always lie and say 5 feet 10 inches. Next time I am going to get more adventurous. (If they ask me) What colour are you, I am going to say white," he said.

However, he made no mention of the incident during a press conference or his lecture to a capacity crowd as he spoke to them about success and failure and how to live life to the fullest.

Encouraging young people to find fulfilment in creativity, to learn to laugh at themselves and to never become cynical about their lives, he said: "Failure is a fiendish friend that can lead to success by teaching one to be pragmatic, to work harder, and to be true to oneself."

But sources said Khan's detention at White Plains airport had caused "tense" moments for Khan and his team as they were "struggling" to get the situation sorted out.

Later, after the intervention by the Indian consulate here, the US Customs and Border Protection authorities expressed "profound" apology in a letter to the mission.

Khan's name was "flagged" in the system and airport people needed approval of 'senior' authorities to clear him, it clarified.

Any one watched news on Geo or AAJ tv telling that all blocked visas of Pakistanis by the u.s embassy Islamabad allowed to issue ?? i hope every one will start getting their visa soon.

I would like to know if there is somewhere online that we could watch or read about this. I hate to get my hopes up based on an opinion. I would be wary about news like this if it didn't come directly from an Embassy offical. Not that I am questioning your Mom or anything, I just again wouldn't want to get people's hopes up if it isn't true.

I hope and pray that the news about Islambad giving out visas is true, I have seen a lot of sincere ppls here who just want to be with the person they love, and its sad that they are being keep apart cause of a visa,everyone deserve to be with their love ones, as for us we dont knw where we stand with our case, Mohsin got two emails from the embassy, one said they are sending back his case to USCIS and the other one said they forward his case to a CO to be reviewed, so who knws wht really is going on,,,,when we call the embassy they told him the case is under review,,, but I am going to Pakistan myself and I am planning to fly to Islamabad and hopefully they will give me some answers,,but anyways good luck to all in AP Inshallah this month will be the month to have your love ones by ur side.

If that is the correct article, then they are only takling about Diplomatic Visa's not Immigrant or NonImmigrant Visas.

First I want to wish you safe travels! I think that is so exciting that you are going to see your fiance!

That certainly is frustrating and confusing. I hope you are able to talk to someone at the Embassy. They usually don't let anyone there unless they have an appointment letter. Although, perhaps they will let a USC go. When I was there last April I had to go to an ATM within the Diplomatic Enclave and they made my fiance drop me off at the security gate and I had to walk down the road by myself to the ATM, although I didn't go to the Embassy, as a USC you do have the right to go, you just might not beable to have your fiance go with you and there is no guantee that they will see you. I have heard others trying to talk to the Embassy while in Pakistan and not having any luck with it. So be prepared for that.

Ty so much Kim,, am also very excited to be going, as I am planning to stay for 2 months with him,, I have called the embassy at Islamabad twice and both times I was told that I do not need an appointment to go, but i can only go between 2pm and 4 pm, I think I have to be there for 2 pm. We are not sure if Mohsin would be able to go or not, but as long as I am able to get in, its worth a try to get some answers as to wht they plan to do with our case, because I was going there to get married after we were told that they are sending back the case, but now we dont want to get married unless we know for sure wht is going on with the case.So thats y Mohsin and I will be flying to Islamabad the day after I get to Karachi.

Islamabad us embassy visa service is very bad ...i think America only need visa fee money from us and no visa just long wait n wait ......why they not tell us clear that why we are getting late ....if they dont wana give us visa's then why they approve our petition's why not reject it ????

I wish I had the answers as to why they keep people in AP so very long. If we knew the reason then I think we could fix their issues. If they said it takes so long because we have to find your great grandfathers on your mothers sides birth certificate to make sure he is not the terrorist with the same birthdate... then we could run and get that information for them and then AP could be over... but I do not know what exactly they are looking for or what they are having trouble finding or finishing or if they are just holding them until they get the OK to release the visa from...??? whoever decides the visa issuance.

I wish they would allow us to be a part of the clearance. I think it would help so much if they would say what it is that they cannot clear or cannot find. And I am sure we all would BEG our families to help us find the marriage license of our great great auntie or our 2nd cousins and It would help FBI finish the cases and it would help us get the visas and it would save money and time

I am hoping for the best for all of those waiting.

Please know that even though my husband is here with me after a short AP of 2 months, I am still with you all and I check and pray that each one of you gets the visa issued. You are not forgotten
