Importing financed car from Canada to USA

Got all my ducks in line to import my car and BAM! the creditor who finances my vehicle won't allow me to import the car and said it needs to be paid in full before doing so. I was told this after calling to get a letter for CBP. The reason I called asking for a letter so confidently is because I was previously told I could import my car as long as I kept automatic payments coming out of a Canadian bank account and gave them my contact info in the USA. I was told then that they couldn't register a lien on the car in the USA but it didn't matter as long as I kept up with payments. Today I was told that was the exact reason why they won't let me take it to the USA, because they can't register a lien. I don't know what to do but pray! I owe $8,000 and am not able to refinance in the USA because they won't touch Canadian loans and I can't get a personal loan of that amount.

Has anyone else been in this sort of situation? What are my options aside from voluntary repossession or trying to sell it privately? I know in Ontario you can be sued after repossession and although I'd be living in the USA, I am not too interested in neglecting my Canadian debts.

Thanks!

Try to sell ti privately and pay off the outstanding amount, then buy another car in the US.

I'm in the same boat, and this is my plan. It sucks. If there was another way, I would be glad to hear about it too.

If your US spouse can take out a loan, you could pay it off in full as well. Obviously your name wont be on the loan but its a means to an end if you want to keep this particular car.

Thanks everyone for the advice. My US spouse had tried to get a home equity line of credit and even with good credit it was a no go. Perhaps he could get a smaller personal loan. We'll try that route. I also just read in my vehicle financing contract that I could not take the car out of the province or territory it was purchased in for more than 30 days without written approval from the finance company and paying an admin fee. Interesting. The fine print doesn't necessarily state that the car cannot be imported and there was nothing in the contract about holding a lien in a foreign country. But I guess the letter of approval is given at their discretion. Makes sense. Just sucks for the time being but I know it'll work out. CAdreamer: I hope you are successful in selling your vehicle.

Have a great day everyone!

UPDATE: Just called financing company again to discuss the contract fine print and the rep apologizesd and said I was misinformed as I am allowed to import my vehicle and they will have a supervisor write a letter on Monday. YAY! Jesus is good ya'll!

Praise God!

Hi. I'm not sure if you will respond.

I'm pretty much in the same boat with my financed vehicle. However, I'm living in the states and have yet to register, or try to, register my car. The reason for the delay is because I came here, got married and started filing for permanent residency while staying in the USA.

What company was your car from? And were you in the USA before registering your car?

Right now I am trying to work out the steps and what is needed to make this registration happen.

I now have my green card, state license and SSN.

Today I called the CBP who then told me to call the closest port of entry. There they said I would likely have to try to refinance the car here or sell it in Canada and then buy a car in the U.S.

Hope you can explain in more detail what you went through. Thanks :)
