Hi there,

So I am gathering all my information up for my Naturalization Packet but have been confounded by one set of directions on the M-477 Checklist. It asks for 4 items, but I don't know how to obtain one of the 4 since neither me nor my spouse have been married before. It says:

"SEND COPIES OF THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS: IF YOU ARE APPLYING FOR CITIZENSHIP ON THE BASIS OF MARRIAGE TO A US CITIZEN, SEND THE FOLLOWING 4 ITEMS:

3. Proof of Termination of all prior Marriages of your spouse. (Divorce Decrees, Annullments, or Death Certificates. "

Since neither of us have been married, we obviously don't have those items. BUT it still says we have to send proof. So how do I do that?

Any assistance would be great.

In the N-400, under prior marriages, just type in a N/A, don't be concerned about the proof as it doesn't apply to you. But if either of you were married and typed in N/A, expect to be deported.

You do not need to provide any documents. As long as neither one of you was ever married, then that request is irrelevant. Go ahead and provide everything else, and do not bother yourself on that. Just make sure that on all forms you fill out, put N/A if that question comes up

Yes, Never been married before. Either of us.

So, is it a rule of thumb to put N/A on anything on the N-400 that does not apply to me as opposed to leaving it blank?

Yes, put N/A or Never Married. The block needs an entry one way or another.

NEVER leave something blank that they can ask about later!

ANOTHER QUESTION ON THIS HAS COME UP:

On page 4 of the N-400 it states:

How many times has your spouse been married (including anulled marriages).

Since we are currently married and she has not NO previous marriages of any kind, should the answer be 1 or 0?

Basically, should I include our marriage or not?

I would include the present marriage. It could be written better. If there is enough room I'd put: 1 (current)

Have think back on my stepdaughter's application as opposed to my wife. A whole bunch of N/A's (Not applicable) was added to her application, never married, never divorce, no kids, female, no selective service, etc. Read the N-400 instructions, if a section or question is not applicable to you, type in an N/A. Used copy and paste on hers.
