Preparing for the K1!

Hi everyone!

My fiancé and I are getting closer and closer to starting this whole process off (hooray!), but we both want to make sure we're prepared and over prepared. We've done a lot of research already, but a few thoughts came up tonight that we wanted clarification for.

First off, my current place of residence isn't actually mine (shared), however it's been my permanent address for quite a few years. I would love a place of my own and have been doing some apartment hunting here and there. I currently don't have too much to pay out so I'm saving as much as possible before I make the big move. However, if I do so decide to move into my own apartment (where he would join me later, when everything is said and done with the K1) would you recommend doing so before we actually start this process, or if I move right in the middle of everything will that be an issue since my address would change?

Second, my fiancé resides in the UK. Now that we're officially engaged is there any issue concerning simple visits to the U.S. even before or during the process? (i.e., we've filed for such and such, waiting on this and that, but he wants to come visit for a week).

And last, I've just recently been hired for a great full-time position after contracting for three months. Today it occurred to me that a credit check may be held on my part along with the proof of income and what not. I myself have never touched or owned a credit card of my own or had to borrow money for whatever reason from a bank. I've never really paid attention to the idea of a credit score until now, and I'm only just learning about the basics. Does a credit check occur somewhere along the timeline for a K1 for me? (any other tips on the general subject of a credit score?)

Thank you!

I'm just back from visiting Jess (almost a week ago :( ) and got in with no problems at all. When I was asked the nature of my visit I said that I was going to see my fiancee and they let me on through.

That's great news! Was really worried about that!

I still have conflicting answers about change of address. Some say that provided you're still able to receive mail at the address it doesn't matter until you get to your status change, yet some say you need to be permanent at the address through the whole time. Can anyone give a clear answer?

The main thing we're worried about is in fact the change of address. I would like to move into an apartment, but if a sudden change of address during the process will delay him getting here, we want to try and avoid it. Help! :(

An address change shouldn't delay your petition. Just make sure to update your address with them well in advance so you don't miss any important paperwork.

Traveling isn't usually a problem, you just need to show strong ties to returning home (lease, return flight, letter from employer, etc.)
