Receipt Number

So I had a boring weekend spent shredding old papers, getting things together to send to charity. I also did reading about immigration things and came across a site that explained how our receipt number is given.

I know I really need to get a life, but mine is in Connecticut working his butt off.

So here is how our numbers are made up

EAC - xx-x-xxx-xxxx

EAC is just the example: It refers to our service centre

xx : refers to the year it was filed

x: is a secret code USCIS uses for who knows what. ( mine showed a 9) which just happens to corresponds to the month they actually picked up our file.

xxx: refers to the 5 month mark ( if your 5 month mark is oct, nov, dec, you drop the "1"

xxxx: refers to where you are in the cases example 4968 would be the number your case is of the total they have received to dat. Not just visa or application specific.

It is an odd coincidence that the number on my receipt number is the day after they "received" my RFE. Especially since we are given our receipt numbers within a few days we send in our petitions.

If you want to send me a message I'd be interested in how it works out for yours.

Happy Monday Everyone.

its shown pretty much the same way

WAC xx - xxx - xxxxx

the xx for mine is 11 and im guessing thats for the year filed in since its 2011 lol

the xxx if i split it up and dropped the 1 it would say 4 - so 4 months?

the xxxxx is got two 00 in front of it and seems like a fairly small number if its the total received

Not sure how the xxx is read regarding the month it should be worked on being there are three digits and month references are two digits. Is one number a day? are the first two numbers the month? Then what is the third number for? :help:

okay using that theory that 27 Oct would be 027, 27 Nov would be 127 and Dec 227? What would Jan & Feb be - shouldn't they be 127 and 227 - or do they just not approve anything for two months?

Just guessing, EAC = East A… (American?) Center, so Vermont, and WAC = West A… Center so California, maybe.

Mine looks like this : WAC xx-xxx-xxxxx with xx=year, xxx=month/day of the received date, and xxxxx is mysterious but a huge number!

My XXX is 030 and my NOA1 is 09/19/2011...don't think 030 means October 30.

Here is how to decipher your USCIS receipt number:

Your receipt contains a case number that USCIS assigns to your case. It is in the following format (ignore the dashes): aaa-xx-yyy-z-mmmm, where

* aaa: The service center that received your case. For example:

WAC - California Service Center (formerly Western Adjudication Center) and

EAC - Vermont Service Center (formerly Eastern Adjudication Center).

* xx: The fiscal year of USCIS, from October 1 to September 30. Cases filed from 10/01/2011 to 09/30/2012 will have xx = 12

* yyy: The working day of the fiscal year when your case is received. 10/01 = 001

* z: Either 5 (in database) or 0 (paper files)

* mmmm: A serial number assigned to your case based on the number of cases received, starting from 0001

I've seen some posters who think part of the receipt number indicates when the petition will be processed - this is not the case. It is IMPOSSIBLE for USCIS to know how long it will take to adjudicate your petition until it is actually pulled off a shelf and touched by an adjudicator.

Hope this helps.

Doesn't work for me… My yyy is 900 something, and my z in neither 5 nor 0.

Then my yyy is 903? That doesn't seem right.

Sorry all...

It appears that USCIS changed the formatting of their receipt/case numbers fairly recently. I know that for petitions filed in 2010 the data I posted above is accurate, but the format was changed by USCIS I guess in either late 2010 or this year. Sorry for the inaccurate post.
