OK I give up. I can't tell after reading all the instructions, and I see different answers. When Submitting my 485, do I need to send A CERTIFIED copy of my marriage certificate? We were married yesterday and I'm not sure how long it will take to get one from the sec. of state office... just wondered it was mandatory, in case it takes longer than i hope of a few days.

Thanks!!!

Yes you do need a certified copy and may take 2-4 weeks to get it, depends on the state.

Congratulations on your wedding :)

thank you hikergirl!! We are very happy, it's so great to know that eventually we get to our goal! It was a lovely mellow day. Now the rest of the paperwork will seem so much easier since we are here and together.

I think you don't "have" to but people have been RFEd for it so it's better to play it safe, and maybe order and extra copy (one for you, one for hubby :) )

Depends on the state, since here in Wisconsin, I was able to get three copies on the day of our marriage. I requested one specifically for USCIS and kept two for our records.

The CORRECT answer to this qn is NO. A regular photocopy of the official certificate, just as the instructions have stated. While the guide states people have been RFE'd for this I have NEVER seen it. The only marriage certificate RFE I've seen is when people send a copy of the pretty "church" copy instead of a photocopy of the original sealed copy.

Could you please link me to an RFE for the marriage cert? I've never seen one for a photocopy and I would be surprised to see one seeing the instructions actually state photocopy.

Don't know who is filing your marriage certificate, but personally we were married in a small ceremony by a friend who was a minister in our own living room. We went the next week and filed it ourselves at the court house and were able to obtain however many copies with the county stamp for a fee (like less then $20 for about 10 I think). I knew I'd need a few copies along the way with this immigration crappola!

I'd send a certified copy myself, why not avoid a possible RFE - just my 2 cents.

Thanks! I asked if we could bring the certificate ourselves to the county office but our church says they mail it themselves and would not allow us to take it, just their policy.. So the courthouse will not issue us a certified copy until it is received by them and recorded. I am just hoping that that only takes a couple of days. It will be the final thing to put in the package.

I guess you could always phone the county and ask how long it takes them to get it into the system? Hopefully the church is prompt and you're not waiting on 'Ellie the 75 yr old church secretary' to get it in the mail :)

do you know the answer to my other question re. 1-693... does that first page have to be signed by a surgeon here where I'm living in mcihigan? I thought I just needed the vaccination sheet and my signature but the first page has a spot for a surgeon's signature ??? I'm glad I'm not in University trying to pass some exams!!!

693 is required to be signed and stamped then sealed in an envelope by a civil surgeon.

As said before in your other question. If you have all your shots, your vaccination from the medical in Canada is the only thing you need. Make a photocopy and send the copy of it.

Well it depends on the state...Here in Columbus,Ohio....we got married in our county and got the certified marriage certificate the same day.....i guess all this varies from state to state....So,find out from others that did the same in your state and know how long it will take for you to get one but in most cases,is with a week or so......
