MOSCOW (AP) — Russia's chief military officer says the nation is facing an increased threat of being drawn into conflicts at its borders that may grow into an all-out nuclear war.

Gen. Nikolai Makarov, chief of the General Staff, pointed atNATO's expansion eastward and said Thursday that the risks for Russia to be pulled into local conflicts have "risen sharply." He added, according to Russian news agencies wires, that "under certain conditions local and regional conflicts may develop into a full-scale war involving nuclear weapons."

A steady decline of Russia's conventional forces has prompted the Kremlin to rely increasingly on nuclear deterrent. Its military doctrine says it may use nuclear weapons to counter a nuclear attack on Russia or an ally, or a large-scale conventional attack that threatens Russia's existence.

My biggest fear is we'll be on the opposite side of Russia, China, India (and anyone else) when the situation in the Middle East blows up. Russia's long been protective of it's borders and "buffer zone" and whenever NATO encroaches, they posture.

It could come to a head in the next year or so.

If the government is going to force me to exercise my "right" to health care, then they better start requiring people to exercise their Right to Bear Arms. - "Where's my public option rifle?"

I agree. Just one more thing to worry about. I saw that the Pentagon just received new and improved bunker busters.

I'm surprised Obama didn't cut the funding for those as well.

I don't see this as anything more than talking big for the press for the fact Obama is going through with the missile shield.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

I agree. This is just more Russian posturing to make themselves look good or as a veiled threat to their neighbors to not think about joining the European Union. Russian military is known for showing who has the biggest b@lls.

LOL Russia needs nukes because they are threatened by the almighty powerful Georgia............. Nothing like exploiting the situation.....

That was my first thought too. I wonder how they could justify protecting all those manufactured citizens by nuking Tbilisi.
