Wow you are ambitious!! biggrin.gif

You can file for AOS/EAD/AP without a social security number.

If you apply for a SSN before you file, ( you will need to wait at least 10 business days after your POE for your information to show up in the Social Security computer system before you can even apply) they will issue you a restricted SSN card that says "DHS Authorization required for Work".

If you apply for a SSN after you get your green card, it won't have that restriction printed on it.

Good luck to you!!

Just to add.... you will NEED a SSN for things like getting a drivers license and working.....so I wouldn't wait too long to apply if you want to do either of those things before you get your Green Card.

Why not just run down to the local SSA office and apply for your SSC now? You can go back in a few days and get a printout of the number. Once you have the number it is yours for life and there are a lot of things that depend on that single number--insurance beneficiary for your husband's employment benefits is one of those things that they like to see for AOS and typically requires a SSN.

Just a thought.

You don't need it for AOS but it's good to have for a bank account, health insurance, driver's license, etc. I waited 14 days after POE and I still didn't show up in the system so they had to send a request to USCIS. It took four weeks before my SSN arrived in the mail. Also, the SSN is delivered with certified mail so make sure that the SSN is either addressed to "Care of <your spouse's name>" or have your name registered with the mailbox. They might return the SSN otherwise!

Apply for your SSN in the name you currently use if you are changing your name after marriage. That way you will get the card without a delay. You can always go and change the name on your card after you are married but some people have experienced problems trying to get that first SSN in their married name until USCIS 'catches' up on the name change. You are supposed to be able to use the marriage certificate for that purpose but that doesn't always work, so best course of action is the get the SSN as soon as you can and then update the information as required.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
