Whatever you do, don't let her watch The Real Housewives of New Jersey or any speech by George W. Bush. You don't want her to end up learning a bunch of words that don't really exist. That would be a terrible strategery.

That's what I was going to suggest. Most public school districts in California have an adult education program, and most of them offer beginning ESL classes. In the town where I live they have classes for four hours a day, four days a week, and the fees are very reasonable - about $40 per semester. Once you finish the beginner classes then you can usually take intermediate and advanced ESL at a community college. By that time they should have one year of LPR status, and should qualify for in-state tuition.

If you enroll your SO in a community college, do classes start at the beginning of each semester? For instance, my fiance won't be here until Feb/March so she will miss the spring semester. I assume she would have to start in June for summer classes. Is that correct?

It depends on the school. They may have classes starting every month.

Depends on the school, some schools allow you to enroll at any time, my wife came in the middle of the semester and they let her start right away. There was also no charge for the esl class, but she had to pay a small amount for the id and some homework, but it wasn't very much.

If there are openings in the class then they may allow a late entry. You'll have to check with the college. Our community college doesn't offer ESL during the summer semester, and the classes are always full so late entries almost never happen.

Also, find out what their requirements are for resident status since that will determine if you pay in-state or out-of-state tuition. In California you must be a permanent resident who has lived in the state for at least one year, or you must have attended high school in the state (this is how they get away with allowing in-state tuition for illegals). My daughter missed the "one year of LPR status" mark by only two weeks, but she'd lived in the state for more than one year, so we petitioned the board to accept her as a California resident student. They did.
