Hi there.. I had my blood pressure taken at the doctor today and it was 130/85 which is high normal. Do you think that will be an issue at the medical?? Anyone out there with high normal blood pressure that got through the medical?

My girl friend went through this process last November, When she went for her medical her BP was a little high but they understand that this process can give you an elevated reading and it isn't in any danger zone so you will be fine.

No. It won't be a problem. I have seen a few cases where it has been really high and they have been advised to see their family doctors to get on medication and to bring proof to the interview that they are on medication but it is not a condition that will disqualify you from getting a visa. They are concerned about communicable diseases that you may pass on to others and not so much about medical concerns you have yourself unless it is something that may put you at risk of becoming a public liability, in which case they may request proof of medical insurance coverage in the US. Such instances, however, are few and far between. You'll be fine.

Haha I'm pretty sure my BP was through the roof at my medical and they never said anything. If you're on BP medication you would obviously need to mention it and bring a note from your doctor but the blood pressure you mentioned isn't all that high..

Thanks Kathryn :-) I didn't think it would cause me to get denied but I am hoping I won't have any delays. I will be in Montreal until my interview on the 23rd. That's what happends when you live on an island I guess!

The doctor said it wasn't high enough for medication. He just said to eat better and exersize.

The doctor at my immigration medical thought I had a heart murmur (which I don't, just an extra heart beat!) and told me to get it checked out by my regular Dr. before I moved. At my interview they asked me about what kind of medical insurance I would have and it was probably related to the note about the heart murmur, although they never connected the two or mentioned it so I'm assuming that's why they asked.

Although I don't think it will be necessary for your medical exam, you should check it out so you're prepared to go on his insurance. For example, to go on my husband's insurance we had to show my SSN and the marriage certificate, but we had to file for the change within 30 days. We missed the 30 day mark and now I'm not eligible to go on his insurance until January!

Just for reference sake: The FAA does not deny a pilot a medical until the blood pressure is over 160 and the ME will take several measurements to get it below 160. Of course any high blood pressure should be looked into--they do not call high blood pressure the silent killer for no reason.

Yours is well within acceptable range for most people.

I think just knowing the basics will be fine. They just asked me if my husband has insurance through his employer and if i qualified right after we married. They just needed to know I had it, they didn't want specifics or anything. Can't hurt to look into it now anyways to be prepared!
