To have or not to have a joint-sponsor

I've been searching through the forums and I'm sorry if this topic has been posted before...

What is the minimum income difference from the poverty line for the sponsor's income to be considered sufficient?

If the petitioner's income is 18% above the required income, will this be enough? Or having a joint sponsor is still recommended?

Thanks in advance for your help!

As long as your income is at 125% of the poverty level for your household size, you're ok.

If your annual income is 18% above the 125% poverty level, no need for a co-sponsor.

Just a little warning, USEM Manila is very strict when it comes to affidavit of support. Many VJ'er posted before that insufficient income is one of the leading causes of rejection and they do not accept co-sponsor. Some made it through though.

just our opinion and i'm sure we're no expert. but for us (my fiance and I), when in doubt...look for a co-sponsor. that way, whether you reached poverty guideline or not...either way you're ready for everything.

USEM is well known to not accept co-sponsors in the case of K-1. Now a IR1/CR1 is a little different, because the petition is handled by NVC.

There was a Pinay just a few days ago that went home after her inteview very sad because her fiance's income was not sufficient.

Thats it, like it says....125% of the poverty level.!

For K-1 Visa, it is on a case-by-case basis whether a co-sponsor is accepted. I know of at least 2 couples whom their husbands to be were both recent

college graduates and so no recent income. Both had their immediate family members co-sponsor them. Both got approved and are now in the US. So,

it is definitely possible.

 Agreed.

At the USEM, cosponsors for K-1ers are accepted on a case-by-case basis. I also personally know a K-1er who successfully used a cosponsor. There also have been many reports here on VJ of K-1ers successfully using cosponsors.

I'm guessing that, more often than not, the USEM accepts cosponsors for K-1ers.

Thanks everyone! Really appreciate all your inputs.

I am just wondering what is really enough (CR1 visa applicant here). Because I've read in some posts there were those who satisfied the income requirement, but didn't get an approval because apparently, even if the requirement was met, it wasn't "sufficient". Of course having an income that is double the requirement is more than enough. How about 10%, 20% or 30% above the poverty line?

But then again, given your inputs, in Manila, they are strict about co-sponsors? What if the co-sponsor is going to be the sister of my husband? Still not acceptable?

I really don't think it makes any difference who the co-sponsor is provided they are qualified and meet or exceeds the poverty guidelines.

The K-1ers are the ones who need to worry about the Embassy. You are a CR1er, so you don't need to worry about the Embassy. Since you are a CR1er, you will be sending your I-864 affidavit of support to the NVC. The NVC accepts cosponsors for CR1ers. If you feel a need for a cosponsor, then go ahead and use one. Hubby's sister will work fine.
