Just picked up some more ammo (Remington UMC 40 S&W 180gr 250 round boxes) at Walmart for $78/each....is that a decent deal and decent ammo?

I'm lucky....my wife automatically approves of all these purchases.

Alla had a victory of sorts today...her first "one hole" 5 shot group at 100 yards. I do not know how to post my photos here but I put a photo of this target in our "photos" at our profile. Click on "photos". She was running up and down the line showing off her target!

Impressive! Then she was practicing her sitting position and managed four targets in a row with all shots in the "black" 9, 10, and X.

She has settled on the Wolf Match Target ammo. When we were shooting (I was using the other side of the bench since she is left handed and I am right hander we can use the same bench) she said "Keep your hands off my Wolf!" Next time we have to fine tune her scope for this ammo and then she can practice more position shooting.

That's insane. It'll be a long time before either of us shoot that well. Kudos to Alla!

It's interesting you mention a sling. I have recently been looking at slings but I have a problem. I bought this Remington 870 about 10 years ago. It has the mag tube that's slightly longer than the barrel. Anyway, there are no sling mounts on this model like the current models. The stock and forend are synthetic. I do not want a single point sling for a shotgun, so I need to find a way to attach some swivel mounting points. I can drill a hole in the stock and attach a mount..but not sure how to place a mount up front. Still looking for the best way. If I had the short mag tube it would be easy but I have the mag extension.

Any suggestions appreciated.

As for rifle choice, all things considered, I like the Kel-Tec SU-16C in 223. Kel-Tec thinks outside the box and I like that.

Pistol choice is tough. To conceal or go to war? For conceal I like the Kel-Tec P9 with Cerakote finish. For war I might go with an Italian made Beretta 92 FS Compact Type L. I will always love the 1911 but my days of firing 45 rounds are over. War or nor war.

On my M870 express I have a magazine cap sling mount. You can do this yourself if you can drill carefully and simply install a rifle sling stud. Use loctite on the screw. I have seen these available for purchase, but I do not remember where. I just center punched it and drilled. I have a small drill press which helps but a steady hand could do this easily. It should not be too hard to find someone with a small bench type drill press that can drill a hole in the center of the cap. If nothing else any local mechanic, gunsmith or machine shop can do it.

I used the sling for general carrying but not while hunting in heavy brush. I always carry a slinged rifle/shotgun the old USMC style, upside down over my left shoulder. Gives good muzzle control and you can whip it into shooting position in a flash!

+1 for AIM Surplus. Also, look for local, free guns and ammo trading sites. You can get deals. make trades, and eliminate shipping and taxes. I just sold a local guy a bunch of 38 Spl. ammo. He got a decent deal, I got what I wanted and gained some much needed storage space.

I agree with Slim, the 870 12 Ga. is a great one gun solution to various scenarios. I own a Express Magnum 18 inch barrel, six plus one. I keep it simple, not a lot of "tactical" junk hanging off it. I am considering a light for it.

Swapgiant.com is a great local resource. It's like Craigslist but you're encouraged to sell guns.

As for the tactical junk, lights, etc., go big. Get the expensive SureFire (or similar) that replaces the foregrip and not something that just clamps on to the barrel. I bought a decent Pelican M3 light and clamped it over the barrel/magazine on my 1300. First shot it flew right out. I'm glad it did because that's why things are tested on the range. It wouldn't be bad for identifying a target but engaging multiple targets wouldn't be an option since it'd be on the floor.

I really like the idea of a flashlight on my home defense shotgun but I'm not keen on paying $270 for one. I may have to though. Until then... I'll just have to flip on the light if I need to see something.

you're gonna laugh....

shotgun - my 12 gauge remington 1100 with the skeet barrel (it has a modified but the skeet is shorter).

rifle - don't laugh - my 30-30 winchester 94. open sights, i can fire off rounds with that pretty quick - and a heck of a punch.

pistol - my daewoo dh 40, a .40 cal.

I can't laugh. The 94 is a great rifle. I'm a big fan of Korean stuff too. There are a couple nations on earth that build and use good stuff for their defense. Korea is one of those places.

The 1100 was the popular gun to have for bird hunting, and my only deer gun was a 30-30 open sites...in Washington state the brush is heavy and there is rarely a chance to use a scope. The model 94 was and is the deer gun to have for Washington, Oregon, and Southeast Alaska.

We can't use rifles for deer. Shotguns only.

One each? Now you will see me go against the grain.

The shotgun has to be a 12 ga. No brainer. I prefer the M12 but since I can only have one it would be the M870 express, my old hog gun. Sturdy, reliable short barrel. The M12 is mechanically superior, no comparison, and much better looking, smoother and I would just rather be seen in public with a M12 anyday over a M870. None of which are practical considerations. :P My model 12s do not go in the hog brush. They are gun cabinet jewelry and go to the skeet field.

Rifle...a .22 rimfire. #######!!!!!!???????? Yep, you bastards are limiting me to ONE rifle for a survival situation and I am gonna kill tons of food with the .22 and not alarm anyone with big noise, big flash. If I can have TWO rifles, I would go for a .22 and my Remington M760 slide action .30-06. Very accurate, common ammunition, powerful enough for anything. The .22 would be Alla's M52 Winchester. I have shotgun slugs for other "rifle type" work and they will have to do, if I can have only one rifle. it is a .22 LR

Pistol, again against the grain with a S&W M27 .357 magnum and 5 inch barrel. One of my all time favorites, versatile, powerful, good range of ammo choice. I would hate to leave behind my beloved M1911, but it is not as versatile and useful. A better pure defense gun, no doubt. I also have a S&W M29 "mountain gun" .44 Mag with 4" barrel which is a close runner up, but the .357 is more useful IF you also have a rifle and shotgun. If I had to do with ONE handgun only and nothing else, I would probably choose the .44

I knew you couldn't pick just one!

There's a lot to be said for .22LR. However, I think the versatility of the cartridge for roles such as small game, etc., could be done with the shotgun and I'd hate to lose the capability of making hits at 500+ yards. With a shotgun (or .22LR) only, you're limited to 200 yards or less. I'd like to keep hostiles further away if possible.

I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned the Ruger mini 14 SS (stainless steel), and mini 30 SS.

Those are both fine rifles. Matter of fact, my first "real" rifle was a mini-14 ranch rifle. I loved it. I added a folding stock and put a red dot on top. Got me several 30 banger mags and I was set. Not bad for a high school kid.

And then, once I carried the M-16 every day... I traded away that mini-14. The AR series is just a superior platform on so many levels. It's more accurate and the sight radius is longer. It's a lot quicker to reload and the way the mags are seated is more reliable. It's more ergonomic and it's way more customizable.

It's basically like this - The Ruger is an awesome truck gun or to throw across your back when you get on an ATV, etc. But, if you have the money to buy an AR, you do.

I've got a couple 94s....great lever gun that once ruled the hunting scene. If I was to take a lever gun, it'd be my Marlin 336, scoped out in .35 REM. Very accurate "in the brush" gun.

the mag tube that's slightly longer than the barrel.

This one's a doozie! (And expensive!)

Attach a cable tie around your mag tube/barrel coupler. Clip your sling onto that. Done.

You may have to play with the location a little but it won't stick out past your barrel and it'll work. Not pretty, but effective. You can use zip ties around anything on your gun and they'll hold fast, even in hard use. I recommend using at least two (Murphy) and looping a few together before attaching your sling to them. Cheap and effective. Just like me!

Beretta 92 FS Compact Type L.

A fine sidearm. People say the 9mm aint enough. I'll take accuracy over power any day and the Baretta 92 is one of the most accurate pistols out there.

Yeah, that's not too bad. UMC is decent ammo for target practice. Buy the cheapest ammo you can find and shoot a lot of it!

I'm lucky....my wife automatically approves of all these purchases.

Now, that right there is awesome!

On my M870 express I have a magazine cap sling mount.

His magazine extends past his barrel and so his sling would too. Nobody likes shooting their sling!

I always carry a slinged rifle/shotgun the old USMC style, upside down over my left shoulder. Gives good muzzle control and you can whip it into shooting position in a flash!

How I carry too.

I use the sling to steady my shots from that position as well. As I swing it up and shoulder it, I also use my support arm to snug the sling. If you shoot with the sling swinging you're doing it wrong! I used to shoot like that before I went to Appleseed. You'll learn a lot of little stuff like that and your field shooting will improve greatly. Check it out.

wait, wait! We get one of each TYPE???????? Then the .30-06 is a M1895 Winchester and I bring along the AR 15 since I already have the .30-06 covered. The bolt action is a .22 and the slide action is my M7600 in .35 Whelen! Now we're cooking with gas! The single shot is the M1874 Sharps. Now we're done.

I have a few M94s and a M64 which is basiclly a M94 with half magazine. In my opinion it was the worst of the Winchester lever guns by far, but the cheapest to make and could be chambered for usefull deer class cartridges so it was a commerical winner. The M1892 and M1886 are better, but one is limited to pistol cartridges and the other is heavy and expensive to make. The M1895 was the best lever gun ever made but looked funny and was probably 50 years or more ahead of its time. The Browning BLR hangs in there and does the same thing (and even looks funny) but I would not call it exactly a success, it has been on life support most of its manufacturing career.

I bought M94s because they were always cheap, including some I got at garage sales for $75. I left one in the bunkhouse, one behind the seat of the pickup, one in the closet. I killed alot of game with them because they were often the rifle at hand.

I always use a sling for target shooting, Turner's are my favorite and Alla is getting one for her birthday next week. I take them off for bench shooting and for hunting in heavy brush.

Alla has been shooting mostly from the bench but she will be doing more position shooting now and will be using the NM sling. I rigged her up a little "cheat stand" today to rest the forearm on when she operates the bolt from sitting position. It will allow her to operate the bolt with her right hand while holding the rifle with her trigger hand, then just lift the forend up into position for the next shot. She is a lefty but insists on this rifle (it is a good one) but operating the bolt from shooting positions is difficult

Nowadays, as a collector, a big consideration prior to purchase is what ammo is required. I have turned down good deals because I didn't want to stock (horde) another caliber.

I also have a Mak pistol in 9mm Mak. We'll all have to posse' up in the woods when it hits......Slim...you develop the plan, OK?

The sling and cap are below the muzzle, it is not a problem. The only problem would be if it is an unsupported mag tube extnsion which is simply screwed to the mag tube. That may be a problem in terms of inadequate support. If it is a factory extended magazine, no problem.

You can also use a clamp on barrel band sling attachment and turn it 90 degrees right or left, Brownells used to make one that had a very slender ring that went between the barrel and mag tube.

There used to be a time, now it seems to have passed, when you could get good deals on guns because they were chambered for odd cartridges. Good news for a collecter vs. a shooter.

M1895s in .30-06 or .30-40 drew top dollar but a .35 Winchester or 7.62x54 were being given away, realtively speaking.

Best deal I ever got...EVER was a Browning A5 Sweet 16 in perfect condition, early model, Belguim made with trigger guard safety for $50!!!!!!!!!! What? Yeah "because you cannot shoot it" Huh? It is chambered for 2-9/16" shells and they do not make those anymore. I DO!

Cut a piece of 3/4" copper pipe to the right length, slide in a shell and trim it with a utility knife. VOILA!!!!!!!!! Adjust the MEC press for the length and away you go. Works perfectly! The shorter shells work in the other 16 ga guns also.

I sound like my Dad now, He used to say "Dammit I wish I had bought a boatload of Lugers for $30 when I could get them for that"

Most lefties I've seen who work bolts reach over with their trigger hand so they can maintain position. Although, I have seen several who'd reach back with their right hand to work it - all the while keeping their finger ON the trigger while they held the rifle up with their left hand. The funniest I've seen is probably a lefty shooting a pump. For some reason she had to switch hands to pump. She just couldn't do it "backwards."

I also have a Mak pistol in 9mm Mak. We'll all have to posse' up in the woods when it hits......Slim...you develop the plan, OK?

I've always heard you should skip the Mak and go for the Tokarev if given the choice. Personally, if I'm carrying a big heavy gun I'm going for a 1911. Those Soviet/Eastern Bloc guns are pretty robust and a great value. I wouldn't mind having a few laying around. I saw three CZ52s for sale the other day. Almost scooped 'em up. But, like you said above - yet another caliber to stock (horde) and that takes money from something else.

One of my possible locations is in occupied FOID territory. We have a family farm down near Olney. Wouldn't be too bad a place to be, I guess.

The sling and cap are below the muzzle, it is not a problem. The only problem would be if it is an unsupported mag tube extnsion which is simply screwed to the mag tube. That may be a problem in terms of inadequate support. If it is a factory extended magazine, no problem.

I much prefer the clamp on since it leaves the sling off to the side. My 1300 magazine is a factory tube and yes, it is below the muzzle, but something about that sling rocking back and forth and sticking up over the barrel - even sometimes - just makes me want to relocate it. I'm not too worried about it since it's not like it'd cause a problem even if it were hit. But, I'd just prefer it to be somewhere else.

Another thing about shotgun slings - Shell carrier slings.

I bought one of those super tactical shell carrier slings that holds 15 rds. on the sling itself. I like it since there are extra shells with me. Easy and convenient and a great place to hold them. ... until you have to fire. Then you have a 5 pound pendulum swinging under your gun. It can be overcome with practice and by snugging up the front of the sling but it's just not a good way to carry shells.

If you want extra shells with you, get the 25 or 50 rd. bandoleers and simply throw them over your shoulder when you grab your shotgun.

"Dammit I wish I had bought a boatload of Lugers for $30 when I could get them for that"

I think we've all been there. And that's why now I just buy anything I can whenever I can.

I am happy that my post that asks for help actually turned into guns discussion.
