Hi everyone,

Latest battle with AOS... I am driving with my Australian drivers license because I can't get a U.S. (Florida) license until I receive EAD. This is fine except I have realized that I'm not covered by my husband's auto insurance. We tried to have me listed on the insurance but the company we use wont list drivers without a U.S. license. I drive the car everyday because my Husband is deployed overseas and we live in an area with zero public transport. I'm really stressed about the possibility of an accident and no insurance.

Has anyone dealt with this before and can possibly recommend an insurance company that will cover foreign drivers???

Nationwide - where my wife had her cars insured - was willing to add me without Ohio license for a fee. We eventually did not use it, did get the license 2 weeks later (had to take driving test despite having been driving for almost 15 years and wait for driving test was 3 weeks).

While each state's requirements vary, my husband was able to get a license in VA with just his NOA for the I-485. The license expires one year after the date on the NOA. I would give that a try just in case, while you're waiting for the EAD. If they don't accept it, oh well. If they do, you don't have to deal with the foreign DL issue at all.

I'm the USC petitioner.

Most insurance here within the U.S. will cover the person driving the car as long as they have a drivers license and they have permission. Your drivers license is valid here and should therefor cover you as long as you have permission to drive the car. my insurance company actually allows a certain time period that my husband could be on the insurance before having to provide a u.s. driver license and when I advised them that he wouldnt be in country until probably december they just extended that time frame for us...so he is actually listed on the insurance.

I noticed you said your husband was deployed. We're with USAA and they had no problem adding me to the insurance without a US driver's licence. Not sure who you're currently banking with but if he's military, no one can really beat them.

OUR JOURNEY SO FAR: (dd/mm/yyyy)

18/09/09 - CR1 NOA1

16/07/10 - POE LAX (256 days NOA1 to interview)

27/09/10 - Aussie/American bun in the oven due May 10, 2011

06/01/11 - Submitted change of address online to USCIS. Mailed I-865 for sponsor. Neverending!

05/05/11 - Bouncing baby boy arrives

10/07/12 - Sent I-751

We had the same issue. I have homeowners and auto insurance through Nationwide and they couldn't add my husband with a foreign DL on it. However, what they did is find us a company that would insure him and it was through Progressive.
