Jury Duty

Ok, So my mom just called me and told me that I got a notice for jury duty. She gave me the number to call and my file number. I guess I just have to tell them that I am not a resident of Canada anymore. I know that you can get out of jury duty for certain things, so I assume the fact that I have moved to the USA is a good enough reason. Has anyone else received a notice for jury duty after moving to the US?

Its going to have to be right? At this point you haven't received AP or your GC and cannot travel back to Canada even if they insisted on you coming. There was someone else here who it happened to, cannot remember the name.

I got a notice right before I was about to move to appear on a date after I had planned to leave.

I contacted the office and told them that I would no longer be a resident of Canada on the date they requested me to be there. I had to fax them a letter explaining this and then a copy of my US visa showing that I was leaving and I also included my place ticket reservation receipt.

They then took me off the list for good and sent me a letter confirming that I would no longer be requested for jury duty :)

They didn't give me a hard time at all.

Oh and this was in Peel Region (Mississauga/Brampton) and I remember the letter they sent me had the name and contact information right on and I just followed the instructions it listed for those with reasons they couldn't attend.

Yes, I believe another member in addition to Sapphire Dreams received a jury notice for Canada after she moved here. She sent the letter back stating she was no longer a resident of Canada and was in the process of becoming a PR of the US (or had just become one, I don't quite remember) and was unable to leave. They 'excused' her from Jury duty. You'll be fine. Just let them know you no longer live in Canada.

My sister in Calgary got called for Duty Jury last yr! She and the others showed up, BUT they were suppose to be cancelled, but someone forgot to cancel them! But it counted as if they had been called, so back to the bottom of the list she and the others went! Sweet deal!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I got called for jury duty a few years ago when I was down in the US visiting my husband. I had a relative call the # on the papers and tell them I was out of country, no problems ever arose. :)

So I called the General Attorney and they gave me a different number to call. I called THAT number and they just said to have my mom cross out my address and state that I am not longer living in Canada, and to mail it back. Pretty simple.

I think a bunch of the questionnaires went out in my area because my best friend's mom got one for him, but he passed away 3 years ago.

Ouch.

Yea. I was talking to her on Facebook and she was upset. I just told her to mail it back and write deceased on it. At least she doesn't have to go through all the calling and explaining over and over to get the information I got. Obviously they don't get information like that, so even if I had of called them before I left to inform them I was not living in Canada, I still would have gotten one.

How careless of them - she should phone the local news and geta story out - but that would stir painful memories up for her :(

:ot: Back when husband was a few years younger his family received a letter in the mail asking why Irving Smith hadn't signed up for the draft. Irving was apparently born by my husband's mother and was 3 months his senior. :wow:

I'm not sure exactly what they did to get it straightened around, by it's been a running joke and everything gets blamed on the infamous Irving now. :)

This just happend to me,

I'm guessing they had no problems with just crossing out the address and stating that you are no longer living in Canada? Tried calling, but it's hell trying to get ahold of a person. Did you provide your new address, or just blank? :)
