Filing I-864: Shouldn't tax transcripts be enough?

Things seem to be moving smoothly at NVC, but we may have encountered a potential problem. We paid the I-864 bill today, and we can probably send the AOS package soon. We ordered my husband's tax transcripts from the IRS. They should reach him in a week or so. The problem is, we seem to have lost his 1099s, W2s and schedule forms. We're close to panicking! It's possible that we threw them out after filing, thinking they wouldn't be needed anymore. We don't remember. Are those really needed, in addition to the tax transcripts? Aren't tax transcripts enough to show how much he earns? If the 1099s, W2s and schedule forms are needed and we can't find them, what can we do? What can we send in their place? We're planning to submit only the transcripts, his certificate of employment and his recent pay stubs, but we're afraid we're going to get an RFE for the other financial documents.

Transcripts should be all that you need as far as tax documentation goes.

Off topic (a bit) > Always keep the W2's, 1099's etc. That is your only proof of what you claimed as income. If you were to need new copies (loan application, tax audit, etc.) they can be difficult to replace as you will have to contact the issuing employer to get new ones. No one else has them! Life lesson learned here - KEEP THOSE DOCUMENTS!!

Very Good and Important Advice. Tax issues and audits can come up years later and just as Anh map said, its the only proof you've got. Don't ever get rid of those docs. Remember, the transcripts only reflect what was originally sent in the to the IRS. (i.e. if there was an error at some point... your original docs are the proof).

Once, my name was randomly chosen by the IRS computer system for an audit and it didn't come up until 2 years after the tax year. In fact both sides discovered that the tax preparer had made a rather serious error in the final paperwork he submitted. Fortunately, I keep all my tax forms and having my W-2 saved me from nearly having a $5000 penalty (it was the preparer's error, not what I reported as income).

Thank you, all! It's good to know the tax transcripts will be enough! And it is good advice to keep all important documents. I guess my husband and I both knew that, but we're both a little disorganized, although he's better at organization than I am.
