I'm moving to USA in a month and was wondering what I can do as far as insurance goes? Do you need a social security number in order to get it? Does anyone have suggestions? Or want to share your experiences. I appreciate it.

When my fiancee arrived last year, I added her to my Policy at work after we were married. they asked for a SSN, but I explained we didn't have it yet.. They were able to add her without the SSN...

You need to ask your spouse's HR department directly how it works. I could be added without my SSN if we showed our marriage certificate. Some places require the SSN.

I got married within 4 days of moving there, so I just waited until I was added on the 5th day.

Removing Conditions

Sent package to VSC - 8/12/11

is there anything I can do as a fiance? or does insurance only count if we are married?

Most insurance policies through work will not cover a fiancée so no. They will cover you upon your marriage which is a 'Life event' for their employee (your husband to be)

Depending on how long you spend without provincial healthcare between moving and the wedding you may want to look into individual private private health ins for yourself or travel insurance (although you're not exactly travelling here, you're moving). I was married 2 weeks after the move so I took a small gambe that I wasn't going to have anything horrible happen in those 2 weeks. I filled all my prescriptions for 3 months before I left ON and by the time I needed more I was on my husband's health insurance

Yeah you'll need to be married to be covered under your fiance's policy. Like Udella mentioned, he can only add you due to a "life event" and then can't make any more changes until your enrollment period once a year.

If something life-threatening happens, you can get medical care... the emergency rooms wont turn you away.. you will get some high bills later, but can pay those off later over time...

I assumed the OP was Canadian since it was posted here - if not just ignore my comments about provincial healthcare
