Hope your case progresses quickly Steph and the two of you will soon be together for good. That is great news about the Dublin POE and something I will keep in mind for myself when heading over to join my husband. Whenever that may be!!

So ive been told an read, dublin is a POE, an i can get interview an hand in my mystery envelope there, an have no drama as i enter the usa, as ive cleared the POE in dublin, is this really true, i can fly via dublin, get sorted and not have hassle or deal with CBP in the USA, i was stunned when i read this,

I'd suggest you pick the shortest, cheapest flight and not fret over POE. It's rarely a hassle with your visa in hand. If Dublin is your closest departure airport, the sure--pick Dublin. The people who go out of their way to clear in Dublin tend to be ones just going for a visit and fear they won't be admitted into the US. So if they get denied entry at Dublin, they didn't spend 9 hours on a plane to get sent back on another 9 hour flight. You're not going to be denied entry.

FYI- Houston is a very easy, friendly POE.

Concerning the clearance lines at US airports-- You will have an immigrant visa, not a greencard. You will not be a permanent resident yet. You will be a "visitor" going through the lines. Ask somebody official which line you should process through, because each airport can have their own preference. Some even have a special line just for visas. Maybe they will send you to the shortest line.

; How come you don't go through immigration and be interviewed (normal procedure) with a CBP since flying from Dublin to NY is still an international flight and not considered a domestic flight?!

Every international flight has to go through Custom Border Protection and Security, is for what I understand.

Not all flights out of Dublin (to the US) clear immigration. Flights out of the new Terminal 2 will clear immigration AND customs in Dublin. Others will clear immigration once they land in the US.

Actually, one of the few K1 entry denials I ever read about occurred at Dublin.

Yes they do, but if you fly from Dublin, this happens at Dublin (by American CBP officers). Same with Canada.

u kiddin'? why would they deny entry after a year-long ordeal to get the visa?

The gentleman in question had a minor blemish on his UK police report that the consulate had not addressed. CBP at Dublin caught the glitch and turned him around.

That might be cutting it mighty close, in Houston, even assuming that your flight arrives on time. You'd probably have to switch terminals, either via a long walk (if between Terminals C & E) or by catching the internal tram between terminals. I'd allow a minimum of 2.5 hours.

As another idea, why not avoid that hassle and its potential for error? Make Houston your (no pun intended) terminal destination and simply drive to Austin. Highway 290 has some good scenery and good places for breaks. It's not a hard drive in the slightest.

It all depends how many planes are landing at the same time to crowd the immigration hall and how many others are arriving on visas that need processing. The "interview" as you call it isn't much. It's just opening the packet and processing the visa. There are many flights to Austin as it's a hop of less than an hour. There's probably a later flight available.

Try looking at Continental website for flights through Houston. They offer two direct flights from Heathrow and multiple departures to Austin.

DUBLIN AND SHANNON ARE POE'S! I'm gone blue in the face from tellin' people this!

I wrote about my experience going through Dublin last Thursday...

Hey everyone,

I remember when I was first on this site months ago I asked a question about visiting the US while waiting on the K-1 visa to come through.

I was worried that I would get denied entry on the visa waiver program, or that they would grill me with questions and I would panic and get turned away. I have read the horror stories!!

I dunno, going to America to visit and for legitimate travel seems much more intimidating than it should be.

I am the foreign born fiance (Irish, male, 25) and yesterday I came to visit America... here's my POE story.

Background info... The Irish and American governments have an agreement whereby if one was to fly directly from Ireland to the US, Immigration check is CLEARED IN IRELAND.

Shannon and Dublin airport have AMERICAN, not Irish, CBP Agents living and working in Ireland.

Shannon and Dublin Airports ARE Ports of Entry for the United States. For anyone who says 'only american airports are POE's... not correct, friends! Please be aware of this.

So, onto my story.

I get to Dublin airport yesterday morning, check my bag in, receive my Boarding Pass AND Landing Card (the one where you have to write the address you're going to, etc.)

Have a few pints of Guinness in the bar, then head to US Immigration (in Dublin Airport).

An IRISH woman asks to see my passport and boarding pass, asks me how long Im staying. I tell her 87 days. Shes invites me to join the LOOOOONG line of people.

After maybe 15-20 mins in line, I'm next..... feeling nervous.

I give the CBP agent my passport, landing card and boarding pass.

ME: Hello, how's the goin'?

CBP AGENT: I'm good, how are you?

ME: Fine thanks!

CBP Agent: So, your final destination is Florida?

ME: Yes

CBP AGENT: Business or Pleasure?

ME: Pure Pleasure (my exact words!)

CBP AGENT: Alright!

He then intructs me to place my left hand and right hand on the machine for prints, then takes my picture.

Stamps my passport.

CBP Agent: Here you go sir, have a nice flight!

ME: Thank you, God bless!

DONE! He never once asked me how long I was staying, who I was visiting, nothing like that!

When I arrived in Orlando, I DID NOT GO THROUGH IMMIGRATION. NOBODY CHECKED PASSPORTS, NOTHING!

We arrived as Domestic passengers, since our Immigration was cleared in Dublin.

Got my bags and now I'm melting in the Florida Sunshine!

By the way, I brought my copy of the K-1 visa application with me, along with an up-to-date bank statement.

I have ZERO strong ties to Ireland. Unemployed, living at home, no car, mortgage etc.

I was sure this would be an issue, not yesterday, THANKFULLY!

You can clear Immigration in Dublin and Shannon, IF your flight is going directly to America.

Dublin---Heathrow---USA, is not direct, THEREFORE, you have to clear immigration in AMERICA.
