Question about showing assets

Hello everyone, my granmda is going to sponsor my husband on the 864 form for the I-130 spouse visa. My grandma is using her assets of savings to meet the income requirements. She does get social security but im not sure that uscis likes to see that as her income, but i dont think the monthly income is enough for income requirements, but she has a ton of savings. So my question is what kind of documents do we need to show the joint sponsors assets meet the income requirements for sponsorhip? I hope someone can let me know because we are getting everything ready to send in. Thanks in advance for your help, sweetcitywife

First of all, the SS is accepted as income no questions asked. She will have to provide income tax transcripts from the IRS (or complete income tax returns with all supporting documentation). As to the assets, she needs to include bank statement, brokerage statements, or anything else that shows the size of the assets--no big deal, really. Just fill out the I-864 asset section, and include the statements, and of course you MUST fill out the income section as well, even if it doesn't meet the income test.

WHile probably not important in her case, any large recent deposits will be questioned since they consider these as possible fraud where someone temporarily makes a large deposit just to get the assets to a larger size, and then gives the $$ back to the friend or relative that temporarily inflated her assets.

Not to be Negitive. More information is needed.

Everything in the post relates to Grandma's Assets and Income and you stated her SSI is below level. You indicated she has a Ton of Money. What is a Ton of Money?

You made no mention of the USC's (husbands income) which as Magical stated will have to be supplied.

I don't want to sound negitive.

Don't confuse what is an Asset as to what is not. We don't know what you mean by that.

If the Husband is working (even though below poverty line) that is good for your case approval With a qualified Sponsor. I, myself am dealing with this rough economy.

Adding information for other members could be to your favor with your questions.

Thanks for answering me everyone. Some old people get social security but have savings from selling their house, having stocks and bonds, im sure you know all of this, and i dont need to tell my grandmas business but she just sold her house, i hope this answers your question. But i shouldnt have to tell that on visa journey, i just wanted to know what documents are needed to show assets. Thank you for answering and helping me to know what documents to use. There is no fraud just my grammy selling her house, i hope that is okay with everyone? My grandpa died so sorry she has no husband anymore, and my husband and me we live overseas and our money is foreign and it is not allowed to be taken out of the country as Morocco doesnt allow money out of the country. Sorry to bother you.

Thanks again for your help, sweetcitywife

OK--it is simple:

1) You MUST file an I-864 for yourself, answering the income questions. There is no reason to answer the asset section.

2) Your grandmother must also file an I-864, answering all the sections--income as well as assets--and assuming she has enough combined income and assets, everything will be OK on the financial side of things.

Since you are not in the same household, your income/assets will not be combined, in other words, it will depend solely on her income/assets.

Thank you very much Magical for your help! You have been a very big help!

This helps me so much.

Thanks again, sweetcitywife

For assets your grandma will have to show 3 times the required amount of income. $3 of assets = $1 of income. She will have to document that she owns the asset (even cash) and possibly how she obtained it.

Is it 3x assets or 5x assets for Co-sponsors?

5X, unfortunately

Since you have two answers, I am confirming that Magical is right.

It is 3X for the sponsor (who is a citizen) and it is 5X for all others.

Navy is almost correct--it is 3X when the sponsor is sponsoring a spouse or child only--that is implied in his answer but I want to make it unambiguous
