As long as you have your green card you can leave the US & come back. Be careful how long you spend outside the US. Being a green card holder you should spend more time in the US than out. If you didn't plan on residing in the US, then you wasted money on the whole process.

Typically you can leave for 6 months or less with no real issues, but if you plan on leaving for a long time and want to eventually come back to the US, you will have 2 apply for a re-entry permit before you leave the US.

You can leave immediately. The I-551 stamp you will get in your passport is a temporary green card. No need to wait for the actual card.

GC usually takes about 2-4 weeks to arrive in the mail.

I forgot about the stamp. I don't know I would trust to mail your GC overseas. Although that wouldn't matter if you came back before the stamp expired. (I know your green card would be mailed to your spouse's address in the US)

Personally if it were me, I would wait for the green card. I know it only took. A few weeks for my wife's green card to arrive. Of course it depends on your POE on how fast you get it too.

Scott & Mary--

There is ABSOLUTELY no reason to wait for the green card--the stamp in the passport gives you all the rights and responsibilities of the actual card, and it is good for one year. You may personally be nervous about not having the actual card, but there is zero risk using the stamped passport.

I realize that but from the sound of their plan they would need an re-entry permit. They have not stated how long they are leaving the US or when they would be back. In any case in the end it is their decision what to do. Yes you can travel right away with no issues. In the end the OP can just totally disregard anything and everything that someone says on here.

One thing that I am comfortable with, may make someone else feel uneasy and vice versa.

I assume the OP has a contract that they need to fulfill & will be back in the US after. But yes they can travel right away as long as the POE stamped the passport right. If not only an infopass appt is needed to get the correct one.
