Importing Vehicle (Volkswagen)

Hey Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with importing their Canadian vehicle to the US. I understand that I need to contact Volkswagen to have them send me a letter of compliance. I also still have a loan with TD and need to get approval from them to bring my car out of Canada (I don't think I will have a difficult time with that). I would really appreciate any feed back about this process and what I need to do once I get to the US... Like do I need to register it and change the license plate right away ..... any advice would help! Thanks

My husband has a Volkswagon Jetta that he had to leave in Quebec because Volkswagon couldn't issue a letter of compliance - something about emissions. We looked into having it "imported" by an authorized mechanic in the US in order to be compliant but it was too expensive/much hassle. Your's is a newer model - however - you probably won't have any issues. Contact the Volkswagon main office closest to you - they will ask for your VIN, so have that on hand.

As far as your loan, totally up to your bank. Orfee got a loan from his bank in Canada before he left - he told them his situation and that he would begin payments within a year. No worries.

Registration of your vehicle depends on the State you're moving to. Check the DMV website for your state and the local City/County office to find out about personal property tax due dates, tags, etc..

Ok that's good to know! I called Volkswagen and they said to fax them My registration, Engine Family/Test Group Number and the state I will be living in. So I will get all that gathered up tonight and fax it to them tomorrow and have them fax me the Letter of Compliance ... on a side note, I called TD Canada (The Bank I have my car loan through) and it isn't a problem to take the car with me ... They just need some info from me once I move...

Thanks!! I do have a little problem though... I can't find the Engine Family/ Test Group Number on my car... So I called VW back and they said just send in the rest of the info that I have and they will see what they can do, I guess it's common that the stickers are missing or can wear out..
