Hey everyone,

Just wondering.. my fiance is going to be sending in Packet 3 shortly after his medical (scheduled for Aug 22) and I'm flying to Australia Sept 7th to be with him for a couple of weeks, there's a chance that the interview may be scheduled for the time that I am there. Do they allow the fiance to come for the interview as well? or is it a single interview only?

Thanks,

Jenn

The consulate only took a couple of days after I sent in pk 3 to schedule me for the interview. So it's posible that you will be there. Also, from what I understand only a dependant child can accompany him to the interview. Although, theres not hurt in emailing the consulate to ask, they are very quick with replys.

I am pretty sure you wont be able to go up to the 59th floor for interview. Only beneficiary can go up there.

Funny, but in Brasil I went to the interview, in fact it is encouraged and looks as only positive if you are ther for the interview.

Why would they not want both partys.

I was asked as many questions an Neecee was, participated in the discussions in Portuguese.

Shows a true relationship for both partys to be there.

Do not know of any consulate that would not interview both people.

Mexico not only DOESN'T interview both people, but the US citizen fiance isn't even allowed in the consulate! They must go to a seperate waiting area.

Because security is very rigid at Sydney consulate and they only let one person in unless it is a married couple doing CR1

OP - It really depends on the Consulate. For example, on the consulate web site for Vietnam, they state that only the beneficiary gets interviewed but when I accompanied my fiancee the CO asked me if I wanted to partake in interview an of course I said "SURE"

I've read reviews that go both ways. In Vietnam my nephew wasnt allowed in the building for his fiance's interview but I had read at least 1 interview where they not only let them in together but they both answered questions.

Australia isn't a third-world country, so the petitioner's presence isn't crucial or a de facto requirement. Interviews can turn into big trouble very quickly in certain consulates if the petitioner ISN'T there, such as Ecuador, Dominican Republic, and I believe Jamaica.

In an interview at a U.S. consulate in most third-world countries, the petitioner's presence on the consular premises never hurts and may help, sometimes to the extent of turning a potential refusal of the visa into a happier outcome. It scores major points if the beneficiary carries the petitioner's U.S. passport to show the CO. As others have said, it could even result in an invitation to attend.

Being smart during the FIRST interview can turn it into the ONLY interview, versus a 221g or outright refusal and the USC's being commanded to attend a second interview (likely a Stokes). Read my signature for one such example, and read the Ecuador interview writeup by PDXBicycleBoy for one of the worst horror stories of all. Either can happen at any consulate in any third-world country.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
