Where to donate stuff?

I was wondering for us Canadians who have/are locating to the US.. what did you do with all your stuff that you didn't want to move?

Maybe share what city you are in and where you donated so it could give the rest of us ideas?

I have a ton of kitchen things that my fiance has better quality of, so I was thinking of donating mine to:

(Vancouver, BC area)

Gather and Give http://www.gatherandgive.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=39

Old computer stuff: http://freegeekvancouver.org/

clothing: maybe http://www.bigbrothersvancouver.com/ (but there is plenty of options for clothing, I might just donate to my local women's shelter instead - same goes for crafty stuff like yarn/scrapbooking stuff)

I have a ton of books I could do without, but was deciding between a library or one of those book donation bins.

Gave most of my things to my sister or to friends who didn't have very much and needed things. The rest is in storage in my moms basement lol going to pick it up on a visit home at some point.

I had a yard sale...Gave things to friends that needed things, the rest I donated to the woman's shelter for women that are starting over after an abusive relationship and don't have anything. There are so many great ideas of where to donate. Do what is right for you :-)

I'm having a garage sale, putting my furniture up on kijiji and donating the rest to Goodwill or the Mennonites. The Mennonites take anything, including rags believe it or not, and they'll make blankets out of anything that's not reuseable. They ship it over to 3rd world countries and it's put to really good use. There's also a group that will take any furniture and use it to help people set up homes after leaving abusive ones, so I'll be looking them up too.

The only thing I won't do, is donate to the Diabetes Foundation or another one of the groups that pick it up and take it to Value Villiage. I found out that Value Villiage pays them by the pound, and they don't care what's in the bag. For example, you could give them a ten pound bag of gold, or a ten pound bag of rags, and they'll get the exact same amount from VV, so I now just donate money directly to these groups and donate my used goods elsewhere.

I had a yard sale ( and left what was left over outside with a big 'free' sign on them); listed a number of larger items or non-garage sale type stuff for sale in the Pennysaver, and sold those; gave away some things to friends, donated clothing I didn't plan on bringing South (lots of winter clothes) to Good Will (and got a tax receipt for their value); donated books to the Library for their annual book sale fundraiser; gave my winter coats to a Winter Coats donation program; took food and extra personal care items to the local Food Bank, and then donated my vacuum cleaner and bed to a woman' shelter on the condition that they come the morning we were leaving to pick them up so we had a place to sleep and I just had to strip the sheets and take the bed apart. I was pleasantly surprised at the value Good Will assigned to the used clothing and I was able to claim the deduction on my exit tax returns the following Spring.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
