Tax Problem for Naturlization

I must say this is quite an unlucky scenario.

So when I filed my application yesterday I had no issues with taxes. Today I opened my mailbox and there's a letter from the IRS... It's CP 2000 Notice that says they amended my 2009 tax return and I now owe $1230 in taxes. Great!

Would this be a problem? I'm pretty sure I can clear it off before any interview gets scheduled and I know I'll have to tell the I/O about it, but are there any other steps I need to take? Such a bummer. Apparently it takes months/years for these notices to get to you since they're based on information the IRS receives from banks, employers etc. But the sheer unluckiness of having sent out my application and stating I have no tax issues and then getting this... GEEZ!

I think you just need to verify the correction and submit the required documents. If you do so - make sure to take with you the "new" return and inform your IO that since you applied, there has been an amendment to your return and take a copy of it with you for the file.

I think that should be ok. Many people receive forms and letters like that.... so as long as you do not ignore or falsify information, I don't see what the issue is...

By the way - I am in the same boat.. I received a different type of request but it was after I filed my application.

Also for anyone in the same situation. You probably need to file amended state returns if any Federal changes affect those.

I would recommend keeping the envelope the tax notice came in, just to show when it was mailed. Also, if there is anything to send in the future, make sure to write a letter of explanation - that the packet was mailed the day before the notice came in the mail. I believe it says on the forms that the information given is true and correct TO THE BEST OF the mailer's KNOWLEDGE. At the time the papers were signed and mailed, there were no tax issues that OP knew about.

The interview invitation actually tells you to bring all the paperwork related to your owing taxes. So bring this notice, proof that you paid and whatever else related papers you will obtain from IRS to the interview and you'll be okay.

Every change that occurs between filing and interview can be - and is expected to be - explained at the interview.
