Medical at Knightsbridge

I will be returning to the UK shortly for the next stages of my K1 visa process.

I have already printed and nearly filled in all of packet 3, just got to send it in as soon as I get notification.

I am curious about the medical.

I am female, how in depth is it going to be?

I have been having pretty much every vaccination they could check for, next on the list is MMR (there is no record of me ever having it even though my mother swears up and down the wall she took me for it...). I've had Chicken Pox twice and also Mumps a few years ago (Isn't the MMR to protect against that? The mumps I mean. If so, how could I be vaccinated and still get it?)

I will be having the Hep A & Hep B complex, but is this really a necessary vaccination? I would rather get it cheaper at my own doctors and provide proof of having it than pay the silly prices for Knightsbridge.

Also, will I have to declare that I suffered depression for some time and that I was on Citalopram and at one point Fluoxetine (Prozac). I just stopped taking the medication when I figured they were only making me worse if anything, since I stopped things just continued to get better.

Will I also be asked anything about my fertility? I have PCOS and 'Unexplained Infertility".

ANND, (I'm forgetful) I also had a delightful boyfriend in the past who like to put it around (sarcasm intended) who I got an STI from, it was his outing really, bye bye Mr! I had the treatment for it, a course of Antibiotics, will I still need to have the HPV vaccination? There will be no records at my doctors of this as I went to a specialist GU clinic in my home city, I've called them, they say they don't have any records that old.

As far as your vaccinations Sarah you can go to your local docs and have a serology test done to see what vaccinations you have had and I am sure your mum is right too. Have that done first and then they can update you on any before you go to Knightsbridge. Your medical wont involve your depression and as far as STD they will give you a blood test for Syphilis and a TB x ray depending on how old you are . I am sure the UK do the same as OZ

HPV vaccination is not a required vaccination for K-1 or for AOS from a K-1.

Get your vaccinations at your local surgery. Check the CDC Required Vaccinations for Immigrants Notes and you can download the I-693 from List of USCIS forms. This is the document that you will get a Civil Surgeon to sign off on for your AoS once you are married. The one you visit at Knightsbridge will complete a DS3032 which is a summary schedule. If you have any vaccination records from the NHS in a booklet form (ie the WHO booklets that were big in the 70s) take them along to your appointment. Before I left the UK I wrote to my GP's practice manager and asked if I could pay a fee to have my computer notes summary printed out to bring with me to help doctors here in the US know my history. It cost £10 for the photocopy paper and was ready within 24 hours.

Regarding the depression, you can speed up the process for this by getting a letter from your GP stating that you didn't self harm or harm others and that you aren't a danger. If you don't take it in advance, they will ask you about depression and then you get to wait while they write to your GP and GP responds. Far easier to do it in advance.

I don't recall them asking about STI's, but it was a long time ago now. If you know you don't have one, respond no. They only take a cursory peek at your genital area to confirm that you are female/male as you state. This takes the form of them just lifting the hem of your knickers and taking a brief look. Nothing in-depth at all, so don't worry about it. :)

They will weigh you, take your height in bare feet, check your eyesight and take a look over your arms for any marks of self-harm, in addition to having the chest x-ray to confirm you don't have TB and the blood test for any transmissible diseases.

It's a simple process that takes about 30 mins in total. The worst part is filling in the questionnaire in the waiting room and waiting to be called, which takes forever.

They will take your word for it on the chickenpox. The only vaccines you need worry about are TDaP and MMR. No need for the hepatitis vaccines. You can ask your GP for blood titres to see if you are immune to M and M and R. If you're not immune to them all then you will need the MMR. (You can be vaccinated but not immune...I think measles is the one that someone people aren't immune to after the first shot...mumps is rarer...but either way, if you're can't show immunity to them all and can't prove you've received the vaccine you will need to be vaccinated.)

HPV is no longer required. If your medical is after the start of flu season you will need the flu shot. (Or, if you will be AOSing after flu season, you can skip this.)

I had a medical a couple of weeks ago. I did state I once had an STI in 2007, which was mentioned but thats it. I was off work with depression at the time of the medical and stated this, and the doctor at Knightsbridge did ask me to confirm that I wasnt on meds and that it was an isolated incident by getting my GP to write (costing me £40) and fax a letter to the surgery BEFORE they could send if forward to the Embassy. Luckily for me I just rushed home, the doc got one typed and sent and it only put 2 days on my timescale.

AS well as taking a peak down your knickers, my doctor was a bit "fresh"! I had a gown on and she just asked me to lay down and then felt my breasts and stomach without warning! So just lay back and allow it. They dont have access to your medical records at all. SO I guess you could withold any information you want to. Good Luck!!! p.s its a longer walk from Bond Street then you think! :-)

They will not accept your self-diagnosis that you are recovered. You will need a letter from, for example, your GP.

On the London webpage of the K1 instructions, there's a bunch of links in the left column with lots of other information everybody should take time to look at. One says Medical--link is here http://london.usembassy.gov/immigrant-visas/medical-examination.html From that page there a link to further information (over on the right). That's a 9 page document about the medical exam with the immunization list, prices, maps, and the questionaire to fill out.

Also if you look at the top of this forum, there is a pinned thread where people often give blow by blow details of their exam.

I had exactly the same issue with the mmr and the mental health thing! I went yesterday :-P

Basically, a serology test or a booster will be fine. You are entering on a K1 so they will pass you if you promise to have the relevant evidence from the doctor before you leave the country because you will need it for AOS. As for hep A+B they are not necessary, they didn't want any proof of my hep B. It was only really tetanus, polio and diptheria and the MMR that they were bothered about. But I think it depends on age as well.

As for the mental health thing, if you can get a letter from the doctor saying that you are not a danger to yourself or others, and about any treatment you received they should pass you. The letter does not need to be in depth (according to the doctor) Otherwise they will ask you for the doctor to fax a letter to them before they can release results to the embassy.

STDs are on the questionnaire, so better to disclose it just in case. You wont be asked about fertility.

I hope that helps! good luck and if you have any more questions... :-)

One of the shots needed is not available in the UK, and in the US we only give it to newborns. Are we exempt from needing that shot?
