I was curious myself as to what a "ghetto a$$" is. Hopefully someone can clarify this for me.

That reminds me of my lexicology classes. I think, I still have my lectures on slang, jargon, argot etc. with some vocabulary examples for each of the sociolects

"Realise" ????? Should be "realize". "the norm" is an idiom and would not be acceptable in a university level essay. Fair enough?

So much for your Ghadi quote in your signature.

Wow!, did you really just go there with that!. I am Australian my friend, and am fluent in British English, not the English that has been technically bastardised by Americans. And its Gandhi, not Ghadi.! And when I say bastardised, I once again am not saying it in a bad way, its just a term I use (or better still, had been 'dumbed down" as you say by Americans..eg,..leaving letters out of words colour vs color, aluminium vs aluminum, get the point!).

I did not realise that people so highly educated could be so ignorant, Thank you ONA for clarifying the british/ american aspect.

And if you're curious about the Gheto A$$ comment, maybe you need to go add the study of EBONICS to your list of educational credits.( I am married to a black man , if that helps!). I asked a simple damn question, an honest to goodness question, and you my friend turned it into a personal attack on me, and dont say you didnt you damn well did.

Vj has turned into a big bitching site, plain and simple, where people feel the need to belittle others.

And finally, I know what proof reading is, I do it alot too, for others. But I have never had my own college paperwork proofread, as I am confident in my abilities, plain and simple. It is clear Ignorance is bliss in your eyes.

I was going to thank you for explaining the whole teaching thing before you turned it into an attack on me.... I apologised for my ignorance in the hope of a decent explanation to my question, that should of been a clue as to the sincerity of my question to begin with.

"ghetto @$$" - NOT appropriate for formal writing. Although for my dissertation, it seems like every quote I use drops the f-bomb about five times. I was assured that if it's a quote, it's ok!

Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Not if you are turning in a paper to a US university, but it is a good reason for a person to proofread.

While I proofread her writing and even typed many of her papers as she dictated to me (I type very fast, much faster than Alla) sorry, but I couldn't be in class for her and didn't do the student teaching she did, the second part of which was university English class (first part of student teaching was ESL classes)

I am glad to help her, but the inference that she is unable to be a teacher after graduating a two year Master's course with nearly a perfect grade average is ludicrous. Seems like everyone here realised this except the one person (no doubt smarter than all the others) from Australia (where college students don't proofread their papers).

PS, then again we have the dolt that gave her a +1 for her wisdom.

I realize it has probably been a half a century since you were in university Gary, so maybe your recollection of what is and is not acceptable work product is a bit skewed, that is acceptable. However, you skip straight to insulting someone who merely asked a question. At least you provided some comedy gold while revealing your ignorance.

Gary, I did not infer anything in relation to Alla's ability to teach, my question was more focussed on why you in fact proof read for someone who planned to teach English. I just did not think that someone who was majoring in English or the study of it needed to be proofread..

I have in fact over the years read quite a few of your threads about her education, and in fact admired her tenaciousness and work ethic in relation to study. Stop reading so much into my original question. Like i said before, I was going to thank you for you explanation of that, until you got insulting towards me.

Your intelligence is now clouding your common sense.

You seem to take offence to the smallest of things, and simplest of questions. I tend to think that someone who will actually try to insult you one day, you won't take seriously, and be none the wiser.

And next time anyone wants ( I won't name, names here) to ask if I am in fact a troll, please ask me directly. Just because I do not post on here as much as I used too, does not mean that some topics do not peak my interest.

It is funny how that silly avatar, that was poking fun at my big butt and small waist, has turned into such a topic of interest.

All of you need to stop stereotyping based on an avatar,....

If it seems like some of us are being overly defensive on here it's probably for the fact that we are wary of anyone with a Union Jack on their flag from past experiences here in the RUB forum.

My wife holds a Jurist degree from Ukraine, and is currently working on her J.D. here. She has an amazing grasp on the English language, especially considering that she's only been speaking it for less than 10 years. And yet, as talented and educated as she is, she still looks to me to do minor editing, or at least just going over some of her papers. Jodee, I think an honest answer to your question is that although Alla has a good enough grasp on the mechanics of the language, she probably still needs a little help on the "polish" that really only comes from being immersed in the language for many years. I wish I could think of an example off the top of my head, but sometimes I'll come across a phrase she's written that is clearly wrong, and yet I can absolutely see why she'd have written it that way. I guess one example would be articles. Because Russian doesn't have articles, she sometimes gets confused (is it "the" or "a" ?) or other times forgets to include the article at all. Not often, but often enough. In cases like this, even though he has no formal education, she can run it by him and he's going to be able to pick things up like that quite easily.

Nice to see fresh faces, stick around, not all of us bite. ;)

Right.

I have a degree in linguistics (I can finally say that! ) and teaching English/Spanish/Russian as a foreign language (it's a Russian degree though), but sometimes I ask my fiance to proofread something for me. It's never about grammar (although, I know that sometimes I make grammar mistakes too), I only ask one question: "Does it sound American?" I'm trying to make sure that I express myself the same way as people in the States do, cause a lot of Russian people with brilliant grammar skills, wide vocabulary etc. might sound rude or too categorical, just cause they tend to use Russian structures in some cases.

Also vocabulary is actually an important issue for me. While I am familiar with super-complicated linguistic terms, I might lack vocabulary on some everyday topics.

Thank you Captain Hammer, that totally makes sense. Thats all that I was trying to understand, I appreciate your response a great deal. I can relate also, as when trying to learn German, I ran into similar problems such as the articles you speak of.

And Why_Me, I understand the need to be defensive, I get that, but why must you tar someone with the same brush so to speak because of prior experience. Tread cautiously , maybe yes. But automatically get on the defensive because I have the same Union Jack in my flag as previous tormentors, is totally unnecessary.

I hope that some people on here have learnt to not judge a book by it's cover from now on, I was brought up to not do that, and hope that others are the same. Just because my avatar makes me seem like a stereotypical causcasian, blonde haired girl..does not mean I am one.

Sir, in my judgment, it's not a good idea to speak for the RUB membership, or any subgroup therein, as with: "stick around, not all of us bite." You can invite anyone to PM you but, within the forum, I'd stick with "I" statements as with: "I'd like you to stick around. I don't bite."

Regarding Australia...I have a connection to Aussies through the Vietnam War; they fought with us as brothers. And the Aussie people welcomed American GIs visiting Sydney on R&R with amazing hospitality. Aussie families would welcome GIs into their homes to stay and the young women were, notoriously, quite "pleasant" towards American soldiers. And the beaches near Sydney were a refreshing and beautiful sight coming from the Vietnam jungle battlefield.

That was another time and reality... today things are different "down under." The once strong, outback cowboy, roughneck pioneer culture is giving way to something different. I say, too bad.

Well there's no such thing as "RUB membership," and insomuch as there is a community here, it's done voluntarily and without restriction (beyond the TOS) or formality. But it's interesting that you would bring this up, because I see a lot of "us" and "we" used in this forum, as I'm no doubt sure you have seen also. I would feel more confident that you had the best intentions of the community in mind as a whole, rather than singling out one individual, if you were to likewise aim your admonitions at others.

Thank you Captain Hammer, that totally makes sense. Thats all that I was trying to understand, I appreciate your response a great deal. I can relate also, as when trying to learn German, I ran into similar problems such as the articles you speak of.

Oh dangit, I was hoping you were exactly like your avatar. :P

Language is really interesting. I learned French in high school, had to take another year of it at university, and I wish I'd appreciated it more than to just scrape by. (and don't get me started on Latin!) I picked up enough Russian to order a meal in a restaurant or give a taxi driver instructions (although one time I wound up clear on the wrong end of the city), but otherwise I'm what they call a "cave man." :D

I'm constantly impressed that Victoria is able to write entire dissertations in a language that isn't her own, discoursing on a legal system that's not her own, with just a few mistakes or awkward sentences in the whole thing.
