Timeline

To address the OP, my ex and I were married in Vegas in 2000. We had planned on going to the US Virgin islands but after taking my parents to Vegas for their anniversary and dealing with a lot of issues with the Ritz at St. Thomas, we cancelled our St. Thomas plans and married at Mandalay Bay a couple months later. It was 100% legit, legal and (relatively speaking) normal. We had a nice tropical grotto setting and flew in immediate family that would come.

That being said, we did encounter the SOCIAL stigma at times. When you reveal to acquaintances that you married in Vegas, everyone envisions Elvis-costumed preachers and hole-in-the-wall drive-through chapels.

Trust me, when we divorced 5 years later, it was considered very much valid and very much legally the same as any other marriage to dissolve, along with all the warfare surrounding it.

This time around, Maria and I will marry at a local church.
